    Dave Ronson decided to kill Brian Everson just about ten seconds after he smashed his left thumb with a drywall hatchet.

    That’s the word that flashed through his mind. Kill. And for once it wasn’t a figure of speech.

    Not murder. Murder was sneaky. Murder was low. Murder was something you didn’t do to your partner. Even if he had stolen your girlfriend. Geneen would disapprove.

    But kill, kill was just the chronic game of ego-slaps that had been going on forever between the two of them, taken to the championship level.

    Must of been thinking about something else, huh? Brian smirked as Dave held up his bloody thumb, the tip slashed where the toothed head of the hatchet had ripped open part of the flesh before splitting the rest around the thumbnail.

    In fact Dave had been thinking of something else. He’d been thinking of Geneen. His former girlfriend. Now Brian’s main squeeze.

    Dave remembered squeezing Geneen himself. Nothing in his life ever felt so good. Not hitting a baseball back in his glory days, not grabbing a bottle of Bombay gin laced with lemon straight from the freezer after a long sweaty day humping board. Not twisting the throttle on his Yamaha and letting the acceleration jerk him back almost to the full extension of his arms. Not toking some Thai-stick and stomping around to Brown Sugar for the three millionth time.

    I’ll live, he growled at Brian.
