    Day 1

Yesterday was my first day on the new job. I finally got out of that old desert village that I hated. In fact, I don’t think I ever want to go back. The sand got in my robes, so many mobs spawned at night, and none of the other villagers ever came to the library! The mayor of Woodside Cove, a plains village right with its very own beach, contacted me to tell me that there was an opening in their library, and I jumped at the chance.

I brought Teddy with me. Teddy is my pet ocelot, and she has been with me ever since I was a kid. I found her during one of the adventures of my youth, and she followed me out of her jungle even though I didn’t have any fish to give her. Teddy seemed to like my new house, probably because it is right next to the beach so she can do all the hunting she wants. She also likes running around the library, and so do I. I don’t know what happened to the other librarian, but I don’t care that much because I finally have people that come by every day to check out books and don’t yell while I do my readings. His loss, I guess.

When I told people yesterday that I would be hosting a weekly reading of any book the village wanted, they clapped and cheered. Even the avid book-readers at home were never that passionate about the ideas of art and reading. In fact, in my library on the first night in a moment of true glory, we began to read my favorite written book as part of our first book club. Even though I expect less than ten people to come to the book clubs I usually host deep into the night, to get people in the best reading mood; there were more people than I could even count last night. There was some commotion at the back of the room during it, and some whispering that definitely didn’t have to do with the book, but it was still a brilliant experience. Incredibly, that wasn’t even the craziest thing to happen. Something else blew my mind even more:

Thank you for all who came tonight. We truly have been blessed on this, my first night, with a miracle, I announced to the room as I finished, and I began to pack up my bag for the night and call for Teddy.

Hey, Book-Man! The only blacksmith in the town called out to me, and I could tell he didn’t know my name even though we had met before. He was also one of the people talking in the back while I was reading, so I wasn’t on the best of terms with him already.

Oh hi. My name is Arthur, by the way, I said matter-of-factly, before realizing that I couldn’t remember his name, so I had to take a guess: Nice to see you again… Cornelius?

Definitely-not-Cornelius looked at me quizzically. Joey. Nice to see you again, Arthur. I’m glad we have someone new in the library. Our old one, I think her name was Esmerelda or something like that, was a little stuck up for my taste. She took everything too seriously. I like you.

He slapped my arm so hard it hurt, and Teddy hissed at him, telling Joey not to try that again. It was playful, though, and the way he shrunk away after Teddy hissed made me feel bad.

Woah there, girl. That’s something else I like about you. One cat, I can deal with. When it gets into double digits, that’s when I get a little creeped out, he said, and I noted inwardly that this was a man who liked to talk and talk and talk.

Ha, thanks, Joey. I’m glad to be here too, it seems like Woodside Cove truly embraces the written word. I’m ecstatic.

Huh? Oh, right. Yeah, I bet a lot of people are here because of that. I like all that book jazz too, but that’s not why I’m here. I wanted to talk to you about something a little more… unconventional, Joey said, looking around and lowering his voice, I was wondering if you’d brought any golden apples along with you when you moved. We have a sort of situation here in town.

Of course, I always keep a barrel in the back in case of emergencies. Follow me, I beckoned, and climbed the ladder to the second story of the library that was now empty. The beautiful building was crafted like no other library I had ever seen. It was three stories, with an observatory on the third floor and shelves and shelves of books everywhere.

Here they are. How many do you need? I asked.

Just one, I think. Wendy has the Potion of Weakness, so we should be all good, Joey said matter of factly.

Okay, I answered before I had fully processed what he said. Wait… Potion of Weakness!?

    Yep, Joey nodded. Why?

You caught a zombie villager? Why are we waiting around, let’s go save them! I started to climb back down to the first floor, skipping every other rung on the ladder, Teddy, stay here! We’ll be back, I promise.

Oh, we don’t need to worry. She has been locked up for about two weeks, I think. She still seems to be in good shape. We’ve just been keeping her in the smithy until you arrived because none of us had any gold. Or apples. Or that many other foods, actually. We eat mostly bread, carrots, and potatoes… Come to think of it, maybe we should broaden our diet. I feel like that isn’t that healthy –

    – Joey! Let’s go save her! I yelled back.

Right. Sorry! Joey ran after me.

Woodside Cove was a lot bigger than Fort Westin, my last village. Even running from the library to the blacksmith, two buildings that are usually near each other in every village I’ve been to, made me feel tired. I definitely wasn’t as good at running now as I used to be when I was younger.

Joey easily overtook me, as a man of less than half my age should. However, he stopped abruptly.

That’s weird, Joey said. Look at that.

A gold bar? I was out of breath and barely got the words out of my mouth.

Yeah! Joey nodded. Didn’t I tell you we didn’t have any gold? I wonder where that came from.

I didn’t find it too weird, so I ignored it because I thought someone probably just dropped it who Joey didn’t know that well.

Are we there yet? I panted.

Actually, yeah. Here it is right here.

Somehow, Joey was breathing perfectly fine, but I felt like I was dying.

Give me a minute, I said, leaning against the wall of the smithy. I watched as Joey pocketed the gold ingot, but I couldn’t tell if he was stealing it, or whether he was saving it for further investigation.

I heard a growl behind and jumped back as the zombie in the
