    Scream Queens - Harmony Fuller

    Chapter 1

    Night at the Asylum

I don’t remember falling asleep. There was no blissful comfort or the slow ebbing of my consciousness. I do, however, remember waking up.

One moment there was nothing and the next I was wide awake, staring up at a grey, dirt speckled ceiling that I didn’t recognize. I tried to move, but my arms felt glued across my chest. It was a straight jacket. It was tight, confining, and amplified every beat of my heart.

Hey! I called, trying to turn my head. I couldn’t see much, but it didn’t matter. The room appeared empty except for the chair I was strapped to. Hey! Someone help me!

    Hello?

I froze, listening as a robotic voice clicked to life from a tiny speaker logged in one high corner of the room. When it didn’t say anything else, I forced my suddenly dry throat to croak out. Hello. Is someone there?

Are you awake, or are you dreaming?

That seemed like a strange question to ask. I was obviously awake. Wasn’t I?

    Awake. I answered.

How do you feel? The voice sounded a touch more human now.

Scared. I blurted, not taking a moment to stop and think. It was a bad habit of mine, just vomiting out anything when I was nervous. Let me out of here!

    You can leave anytime.

Great. Then I want to go now.

    I will send someone.

Thanks. I muttered, feeling a bit more like myself now that there was hope that this weird nightmare, whatever it was, might end. I wanted to ask where I was. How I had gotten here and why, but none of those things seemed important. Getting out was.

Behind me, a lock rattled, and I froze once more.

    Creak

The movies get it wrong. The noise of a squeaking door followed by the distinct sound of footsteps isn’t deafening in a quiet room. It’s subtle, almost mesmerizing, as though you were in a dream that you can only hear through the sound of your own frantic heart.

Whoever owned those footsteps came up behind me, and for the first time I noticed I was strapped to the chair by a system of hooks sewed into the jacket. One by one they were released, freeing me from the chair, even though my arms were still tightly held to my body. I leapt up, spinning on my captor.

It was a young woman. Older than eighteen, but it was a tossup if she could legally drink yet. She smiled at me, cocking her head slightly to the side. It caused a cascade of dark, straight hair to fall over her shoulder and trail down her chest. She was nicely proportioned, although a touch short.

May I touch you? She asked. Her voice was soft, but she was definitely not the same person on the other side of the speaker.

Why? I backed up a step.

    You said you want released.

A moan drifted through the partially opened door behind her. I couldn’t make out what
