About this ebook
A Witch missing magic. A Familiar missing a Master.
October Barlow is a Witch in theory with the power to see and speak to the ghosts of the dead. But with no Familiar by her side, no reputable magic company will hire her and there is no mystic solution for rent. So it’s no surprise that she can see just how deceased her career is. Desperate for any job, she takes on a pet funeral that might lead her through the door of destiny.
Kaz is a Familiar with no Master and she likes it that way. Spending her day’s contently running a potion shop, she helps supplement any magical needs that might be above the abilities of the local Witch’s Familiars. It is the perfect life, until a down on her luck Witch walks into her shop. And her life.
Kaz can feel the power buried just below October’s self doubt. As the seeds of magic start to grow between them, the Familiar faces an impossible choice. Lose her soul to a Master, or walk away from the love of her life.
Familiar Love is a quick read novella intended as a fun afternoon for adult audiences. HEA guaranteed.

Familiar Love - Harmony Fuller
OCTOBER
I'm sorry October, there aren't any openings right now for a Witch of your...
I watched the man in front of me trying to come up with an acceptable way of saying it. Subtle talents.
He finished smiling. I imagined he was pleased with himself.
What you mean, Mr. Brightwood, is that there is no place for a witch here without a companion.
I couldn't keep the hint of anger tinged sadness from touching my voice. I knew I wasn't ever going to be powerful enough to attract a Familiar but to be denied a job because of it hurt. I am a Speaker of the Dead. With the recent Zombie attacks-
He cut me off there. Yes, the recent attacks. The time for girls like yourself, who can speak to the idiotic dead, is over. The Necrolords are in charge now, and we need genuine Witches on the frontline. Witchs with Familiars to whose powers they can focus and forge into a greater weapon than a teatime talk.
I felt my chest grow tight and nodded sharply. That was it then. I stood, gathering my skirts around me as though they could protect me from yet another rejected walk of shame. It was always the same thing, the same looks from the secretaries as I passed. Of course. Sorry for wasting your time.
I threw as much sarcasm as my washed out dreams could muster into the words and saw myself out.
The city outside didn't care about my upcoming rent or the fact that I hadn't been able to get an actual job in months. It hustled on as it always does, aware of only itself. It was a crisp September day, the chill of the Fall finally settling over my shoulders as I walked towards the bus stop. A trio of teenage boys snickered at me as I passed, and I wished for nothing more than the ability to turn them into newts right there on the sidewalk.
But I couldn't and that was the problem. I wasn't a real Witch.
I sighed heavily as I queued up to get onto the arriving bus. An old woman in front of me glanced back, saw my formal Witch's attire, and glanced away. Even this many years later, we were still condemned by some. The irony that my one and only true talent was speaking to a dead generation that hated me was not lost. I wondered if the woman even knew she was a ghost or if this had just been her daily commute and so her spirit continued to do it. Either way, she got on for free while I had to fish a fistful of change from my purse.
I sat down behind the driver, ignoring everyone else onboard. The streets stretched out before me as the bus moved and I closed my eyes against it. Even that small comfort was taken from me, however, as my phone buzzed in my pocket.
Yeah?
I asked, my voice gruff from the swell of self pity and tears I had been holding back.
The voice on the other end of the line seemed to catch the emotion and spoke apologetically into my ear. I'm sorry, is this October Barlow?
I nodded as though she would see it through the speaker, Yes.
Oh, good-
I heard her take the phone from her ear, yelling at a child nearby Joshua, stop that!
I cringed, knowing what was coming next. When she spoke into the phone again, she confirmed my worry. I wanted to book you this afternoon for a dead hamster burial. Your ad in the classifieds said you do those, right?
Yes, of course.
I forced my voice up a series of octaves while taking down her information. The boy had accidentally introduced the poor creature to his cat with the expected results. The distraught parents naturally had decided to give the rodent a proper funeral, complete with a Speaker to send the little guy onto the next life. It wasn't a glamorous or even well-paying job, but at this point, it was all I had. Luckily, the address was in the general direction my bus was already heading so as long as I could stop by a potion shop really quick...
A sign blinked into view, Kaz's Catastrophic Concoctions, and I pulled the brake cord. At least the universe hadn't decided to completely abandon me today.
The bus was already moving before my heels had even touched the pavement and I frowned, once more wishing for the power to exact some sort of petty revenge on the metal machine. I snorted a chuckle, privately wondering if my repressed anger was why the universe had decided to not give me any actual power. Maybe it was afraid of how I would use it.
Stepping up to the door of the shop, I noticed the outline of a black cat etched into the glass of the window. It was a sign that all potions and wines within would be Familiar brewed and certified. That worked perfectly for me. The idea of Familiar made wine, a brew that was more potent than the normal stuff, was exactly what I needed to get through the rest of the day. With that comforting knowledge in my brain, I pushed my way inside.
Like most potion shops, the inside smelled like an aged hippy, causing my nose to wrinkle up. Dim lighting and the absence of the pleasant background music you find in other stores finished the feel. I glanced at the rows and rows of shelves, but quickly decided I didn't want to waste time poking around at potions I couldn't afford or even use.
Hello?
I called, walking up the counter. There was no bell, but there was an open, shadowy door leading somewhere... I rolled my eyes, assuming it was supposed to be cultivating the mysterious nature of the shop. I leaned over the counter, raising my voice a little. Anyone here?
I heard something that sounded distinctly like a hiss from behind the door, but there was no other movement. I rolled my eyes, time ticking away. It would be possible to go to the poor hamster's funeral without the powder I was here for, but I had really wanted that wine. I leaned over one last time, sucking in a breath to yell, when a sensation rushed over me, knocking the oxygen from my lungs. I coughed, pulling back from the counter
