PRELUDE
William Dunbar was born in an Irish Catholic conclave in the Bronx, New York. The third child of five, his early life centered mainly around school, household chores, hand-me-down clothes, and playing stick-ball in the streets with others like himself. There was church on Sundays which involved the entire family.
His early education was gained at St. Augustine’s Catholic school where his teachers were Nuns and Christian Brothers. William was a quick learner and very curious, especially when it came to the subject of religious history. As he grew, his intentions of becoming a Catholic priest grew also.
At eighteen, after graduating with honors from Cardinal Hayes High School, William informed his family of his intention to enter St. Joseph’s Seminary and become a priest.
His mother watched as his father’s eyes became wet and the entire family swelled with pride.
That declaration was one of the proudest days in the Dunbar household.
It begins…
PART ONE
The Eighth Scroll
Hot… the overly warm winds swirl constantly across the sand, causing rivets of sparkling sand grains; the ever-changing dunes of a beautiful desert scene.
The nomadic goat herders carefully watch over their herd as they search for tufts of grass for the herd to feed on. Ahmad is one of the herders, being a fifth-generation herder. He realizes the importance of his position, as his family depends on the well-being of the herd. From time to time, he checks each animal to ensure that the bell around each of their necks is secured. This is the determining factor in knowing just where each animal is. Ahmad, who has been a herder for most of his twenty-five years, has become acutely aware of the directions from which the bells sound on the animals.
He sits on his haunches, dressed in a light-colored wrap that helps to shield him from the burning sun and the sand crystals that are occasionally whipped up by the winds.
He daydreams of the women he has seen and sometimes encountered whenever he is called upon to take some of his herd into the city market for sale.
Interrupting his thoughts is the sound of a single bell coming from a direction other than where the bulk of the herd is currently feeding.
Rising to his feet, he quickly determines the direction from
