About this ebook

He may be the new owner, but he doesn't own me... yet.

Jade

Managing the cat cafe in Sugarville isn't just a job, it's my passion. But when my boss retires and his smooth-talking nephew, Wesley, waltzes in as the new owner, my orderly world is thrown into chaos.

He may be the most attractive man I've ever met, but his charm and good looks are distractions I don't need. I'm torn between protecting my cafe and giving in to the undeniable pull between us.

I know better than to get involved with my boss... don't I?

Wesley

I came to this small town to escape the chaos of the city and to care for cats, not to get into a war of words with the grumpy cafe manager, Jade. She's got a chip on her shoulder, and it's got my name on it.

But as much as she irritates me, and the more we bicker, I find myself distracted by thoughts of her when I should be focusing on work. She's stubborn, fiery, and irresistibly gorgeous.

I need to convince her that I'm not the enemy... just her boss.

    JADE

R etiring? I stare at Mr. Thompson in disbelief. Are you kidding?

He laughs, clearly delighted at my surprise. I've already been putting this off for years, dear, it's long overdue. And don't you worry—I have the perfect successor lined up. My nephew Wesley will be taking over ownership of the Sugarville Cat Cafe!

I let out a sigh, slumping into the chair across from him. I can't believe that after all these years, you're just going to take off and hand this place to some random guy.

Mr. Thompson's eyes are kind, the corners crinkling with his signature warm smile as he lets me vent—he's gotten used to it after working with me for so long. 'It won't be some random guy, as you called it, Jade, he says, a hint of amusement in his voice. He's my nephew, so hardly a stranger. And he's leaving his fancy corporate job to do this for me—for us. Now, while he'll be taking over for me as owner, you'll still be the manager so nothing will really change where you're concerned. I was hoping you could show him the ropes over the next few weeks as he settles in."

Your nephew? My heart lurches at the thought of someone new taking over the place I've poured my soul into for years, relative of Mr. Thompson or not. I've certainly never met him, so how close could they even be? But, I press on, trying to keep my tone respectful, are you sure he's the right person for this? I don't want to come right out and say why not me? but those are the only words on my mind.

I understand your concern, Mr. Thompson says gently. But trust me when I say that Wesley is genuinely interested in the success of this business and the welfare of our cats. He's a hard worker. I've spoken with him at length leading up to my decision, and I believe he's a good man who will take care of this place just as well as we have, maybe even better.

I struggle to suppress the flicker of doubt that nags at me, but I nod. If you think he's the right fit, then I'll do everything I can to get him up to speed around here. I try to keep the bitterness out of my voice, but I'm only partly successful.

Mr. Thompson leans back and claps his hands together, a grin on his face. I knew I could count on you! No one knows this place better than you—which is why I've asked Wesley to be a good student and learn from you. His expression softens into one of care and
