City Girl's Small Town Love - Delilah Rohm

    1

Miranda taps her pen on her desk, unswayed by my protests. Chloe, when was the last time you took a break? You're practically running on fumes. No arguments.

I cross my arms, grumbling. As a marketing exec, my job is my life. But ditching my clients for a whole month? Come on, Miranda. You know how much work I've got piled up right now. Can't we find some middle ground here? What if I just did half-days for a while?

Miranda shakes her head, determined. You need this break, Chloe. It's company policy starting now. Vacation time no longer falls under 'use it or lose it', it's just 'use it'--it's this whole encouraging work/life balance thing we're trying. So quit whining and get out of here. She smiles, though I can see a tinge of concern in her eyes. When's the last time you did something just for fun?

I let out a sigh, running my fingers through my hair. My work is fun! At my boss's unamused glare, I let out a sigh of defeat. Fine. One month. But I won't enjoy it, I promise you that. And who's going to pick up the slack for all my clients? I can't afford to fall behind.

Miranda waves away my concerns. They'll survive without their workaholic marketing director for a few weeks, and we've got bodies to spare.

The interns? They'll ruin everything I've worked--

I'll pick up the slack, don't worry, Miranda says, interrupting me. She leans forward and looks at me over her glasses with a quirked eyebrow. What the hell do you even do when you're not glued to your desk?

Oh, you know, stuff. The usual, I say, glancing away.

Miranda leans back, shaking her head. "You need to find some balance, girl. A hobby. Friends. Hell, maybe even a man. In fact, that's your assignment for the next month. Get some."

I scoff, but she raises a hand to stop me. Just hear me out. Life is about more than chasing success all the time. Her smile softens, but I can tell she still means business. "Don't waste the prime of your life all on work, is all I'm saying. Just don't tell my bosses I said that."

I stare back at her, thinking about what I'll do in my little apartment for an entire month without work. Gritting my teeth, I say, Alright, fine. I'll try to shift into vacation mode. Not even I believe the words coming out of my mouth, but it's clear I don't have a choice.

Back at home, I notice an envelope slipped under my door. Curious, I tear it open and discover that my late Aunt Edith has left me her house in Sugarville. I blink at the letter as memories of childhood summers spent at her home come flooding back. I thought she'd sold it ages ago.

I immediately dial my mom's number and, after venting about my forced vacation, read her the letter. "Can you believe it, Mom? Aunt Edith left
