DEDICATION
This book is dedicated to all social workers in the profession for being the most caring people I know. I also would like to dedicate this book to my immediate family: my wonderful husband, Robert Flores, for his skill, creativity, and guidance, as well as to my beautiful daughter, Robin Flores, for her support and encouragement. A special thanks to the memory of my father, Victor Torres, for the inspiration he provided me through his work in the field of human services.
I owe a debt of gratitude to my mother, Maria Ramona, and brother, Staff Sergeant William Rodriguez, for all the sacrifices they made that allowed me to live a better life. Finally, I thank my Godmother, Maria Custodio, for the unconditional love and care that she gave me.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I want to acknowledge the many people who helped me create this book for their skills, patience, and guidance. A very special thanks goes to my book editor, Gina L. Henderson.
I am particularly indebted to Dr. Robert T. London, a well-known psychiatrist, cognitive therapy expert, and author of the book, Find Freedom Fast: Short-Term Therapy That Works.
Dr. London also has been a newspaper columnist for more than 35 years, specializing in and writing about short-term therapy.
Another heartfelt thanks goes to Father Serafin Gomez, a Jesuit priest and psychologist for being my mentor and role model extraordinaire. Have you ever known such a priest?
I am eternally grateful for the friendship of Lillibeth Febres, a compassionate and accomplished woman who holds a bachelor’s degree in biology, a master’s in public health and investigation, and a certificate in gerontology. Lillibeth, my best friend since high school, has been extremely supportive and kind over the years. She also helped my mother during Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

This book is about my life as a social worker in New York City, describing the city and its people during that time period. It is also a biographical account of my life. Since childhood, I have dreamed of writing a book about my life with my family and how they inspired me to pursue this noble profession. This book aims to raise awareness about the life of a social worker in New York City.
We need to know our past and where we came from to understand who we are. And every experience of my life has contributed to my present and will influence my future. I will share the struggles I faced as a social worker and provide examples of my work, comparing my education and past experience with my life. Furthermore, I want to highlight the importance of self-care in this profession. I hope that you enjoy my autobiography.
