    CHAPTER 1

Marilee Dolar shook her head as the rain finally eased off and the clouds parted revealing a perfect star-studded sky. Grabbing her thick and heavy hair, she wrung out the excess and allowed it to drop back over her shoulder and down along her spine.

The warm muggy air was little comfort to her as she sat there on the outcropping, her binoculars beside her as she tried to clear her eyes before looking up at the night sky once more. She wanted to get dry and curl up in a warm bed, but she’d been out here trying to get this view for a week now.

I probably could use a shower as well. Pretty sure the animals around here will want to kill me because I’m so frickin’ rank.

Rolling her shoulders, she wiped her palms off on her soaked pants before shaking her head in disgust. Nothing at all dry on her. However, it wasn’t like she’d been dry before the rainstorm had rolled in. Jungle weather tended to keep one moist at all times.

Her poncho was beside her, rolled around her camera, making damn sure that stayed well protected. She needed this shot. All of these. This was a rare phenomenon that was going to happen tonight, and she’d hiked for a week in this damn jungle to climb to this outcropping just to be there to grab photos of the view.

She shook her hand and rubbed the heel of her right along the scar of her left. It ached like a mother but again, something she was going to ignore. All she could hear was her boyfriend, ex-boyfriend berating her for losing feeling in that hand as was wont to happen and dropping some soup on his suit.

That had been the final straw, she’d packed up all her things and had been gone before he’d returned from work the next day. Tucking some loose strands of hair that had fallen forward back behind her ear, she picked up her binocs and put them to her eyes as she took in the view.

What a place to have a home. I wonder if the animals ever look up and get the majesty that is here for them to look upon. Binocs down, she carefully unwrapped her camera and rested her thigh on the poncho in case the wind picked up once more, for she didn’t want to lose it, and peered through the finder.

She had a few SD cards but she wasn’t worried that she was going to run out of space. And her battery was fully charged, not
