    Earning Independence - Abroad - P.J. Crescent

    Chapter One

‘I can’t believe we’re finally here!’ Kim’s excitement is palpable. We only landed in Spain three hours ago, and we are already out enjoying the nightlife.

‘Me too. All that saving was worth it. This place is amazing.’ I turn to the street, watching the people walk past our outdoor table, dressed for a night out. The music from the bar is blasting, and we are both already on our second Sex on the Beach cocktail.

‘Candice, don’t look now, but that guy over there keeps smiling at me.’

    ‘Where?’

‘Right behind you. Don’t just turn. Look discreetly.’

I pretend to drop my napkin on the floor and reach down for it, looking behind me. There is indeed a group of hot guys and one of them has his eyes on Kim.

‘Wow,’ I whisper, getting up and sliding back on to my chair. ‘He is hot.’ I reach for my bag that I left on the stool beside me. But it’s not there.

‘Oh my God, Candice, he’s coming over.’

‘Kim, where’s my bag?’ I slide down off my stool and look around the floor.

‘You just had it, didn’t you?’ she answers, her gaze fixed on the approaching guy.

‘Hello, ladies,’ he says. ‘I haven’t seen you around before. I’m Ryan.’ He extends his hand first to her, then to me, but his focus is only on Kim.

‘Hi Ryan. I’m Kim, and this is Candice. We just arrived. Flew in three hours ago,’ Kim tells him, making space for him to sit at our table. I’m scanning the bar, searching for my bag, my heart racing.

‘Kim, it can’t have just vanished.’

‘What are you looking for?’ Ryan asks.

‘My bag. I had it two minutes ago. It was just here. I put it on the stool.’

‘It must be on the floor,’ Kim says, sipping her drink whilst lowering her eyelashes in Ryan’s direction.

‘There are pick pockets around. Maybe someone took it,’ Ryan says.

‘No, that’s not possible. I had everything in there: my passport, all my holiday money, and my cards. No one can have taken it, or my holiday will be ruined.’

‘Yeah. It’s not possible,’ Kim agrees. ‘There’s no way you could have lost it. You didn’t leave it in the hotel room, did you?’

‘No, I had it just now. At least I think I did. I’m pretty sure I brought it out. Although, we were in such a rush.’ I close my eyes, trying to remember. ‘Perhaps I didn’t...’

‘That must be it. You left it in the hotel room. Relax, enjoy your drink.’ Kim pushes the glass towards me. ‘So, Ryan, are you here on holiday too?’

‘I’m here for the season. I work in one of the bars up the main strip, but me and the lads have this week off.’

‘That’s so cool. You must know the good places to go! You’ll be able to give us some recommendations. That’s great, isn’t it, Candice?’

‘What? Oh, yeah, sure.’ I sip my cocktail, although drinking is the last thing I feel like doing now. My whole life is in that bag. At least my phone was on the table, but the rest of my stuff? I knew I should have put the passport and money in the hotel safe when we arrived, but we were in such a rush to get out, I didn’t have time. I just hope my bag is in the hotel room.

‘Look, Kim, can we run back to the hotel and take a look? I can’t relax until I know where it is.’

‘What?’ The smile disappears from her face. ‘We just got here. I don’t want to leave now.’

‘You can stay with us while Candice goes on her own, if you want,’ Ryan suggests. ‘We’re going to have a few more drinks here, then go to the club next door later. Would be nice if you hang around.’ He smiles at her, and Kim lowers her eyes to the table, blushing.

‘Yeah, I’d like that. Here, Candice, take my key.’ She passes the hotel room card to me and gives Ryan a smile.

‘Right, well, I’ll go on my own then,’ I say, although they aren’t paying attention to me. ‘If I find it, I’ll come back. If I don’t, I guess, I’ll go report it to the police.’

‘Sure, see you later.’ Kim waves.

I hurry back to the hotel and take the lift up to our room.

Please be there, please be there, I repeat silently as I walk through the door, although I already know it won’t be. I know I took it out with me earlier. With all my things in it. It’s been taken by pick pockets. But how was that possible? It was right beside me on the chair. I would have noticed if anyone came close to me.

I let myself into the room and look around. Our suitcases are open on the stands where we left them, not even unpacked. The beds are still perfectly made. All we did as soon as we arrived was get dressed up, do our makeup, and leave.

I sink down onto my bed and switch on the TV. I’m not in the mood to go to the police station to report it yet. It’s too late, it’ll probably be shut now,
