Area 81
Laura Walters
The broken fence was Laura’s first indication that something was out of place at the Outer Mining Corp. compound. But what set her senses on full alert was the huge smear of blood near the gate. As she drove the bike past the crimson stain, she had to resist the gag reflex when her eyes caught what was left of the body parts that once belonged to the owner of the blood.
Laura parked the bike near the entrance. She could see a bus near the entrance that seemed to have been man-handled. Blood spatter decorated one side of the bus like amateur graffiti.
What the hell happened here?
she asked softly and squeezed the handle of the gun slightly tighter for peace of mind.
The silence was unnerving, adding to the ominous mood of the seemingly empty compound.
Laura parked the bike and carefully worked her way to the main entrance. After a final scan of the terrain, she slipped into the building through the main doors.
Hello?
Laura asked softly as she entered the foyer and made her way to an empty reception desk.
No one returned the greeting.
Thud!
Laura spun around, gun aimed high.
Nothing.
Thud!
She looked at an open red door with stairs leading down. The sound was coming from somewhere on the floor below her. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that the creatures from the ambush had paid this place a visit too. Laura wondered whether those on the compound at the time had been evacuated or eliminated. She thought about the pool of blood and loosely strewn body parts at the gate and shuddered.
Crack!
Laura carefully made her way down the stairs. On the first floor, what used to be a security door hung on one hinge, allowing her enough space to look down the hallway without exposing her location.
Oh God! They’re breaking through!
Laura held her breath. Three of the creatures like those she had seen at the ambush were pounding away at one of the office doors. Each time the door cracked, she could hear muffled screams of panic come from behind it.
Thud! Thunk! Snap!
Just as the door finally caved in, a young man ploughed his body into one of the creatures as hard as he could. The creature fell back against the wall. The other two ignored the melee and instead entered the room where they consumed those trying to hide inside.
The man in the hallway stood up and ran toward Laura as fast as he could.
The creature stood up and pursued.
The man was within arm’s reach of the door when the creature leapt through the air and wrapped its arms and legs around him, sending both of them crashing
