In book five of the "Jess and the Monsters" series, the action resumes immediately following the events of “Jess and the Carnival Killer.” Just as the Carnival Killer is defeated, a new problem presents itself: The Carnival is being overrun by zombies!

Are they really zombies? Where did they come from? Who raised them, and more importantly, why? After a little investigation, Jess and her allies learn that these aren’t typical movie zombies, these are something much more powerful, much more evil, and much more dangerous to the world at large. Stopping a handful of the creatures is easy, but an evil mastermind has bigger plans in store. How far will Jess go to stop the plan?

This is the fifth issue of the bi-weekly serial, Jess and the Monsters. Over the course of the series, Jess will encounter new friends and do battle with all manner of creatures.

Introduction

We hope you’ve enjoyed the first four episodes of the Jess and the Monsters Series.

When we left off, Jess had taken Jack’s motorcycle and run for her life, fleeing the FBI and werewolves. She thought she had found refuge at a nice little bed & breakfast in Tennessee, but found ghosts and a demon there instead. After that, she found herself involved with a murderous college student who was killing her competitors with evil magic. In book four in the series, she found that a mind-controlling mutant was behind the strange disappearances at the Silver Moon Carnival. Just as that incident came to a close, it appeared that zombies had overrun the carnival.

So here’s the plan: We’ll be releasing a new stand-alone Jess tale every other week until the story ends. We’ll also be releasing the stories in six-book seasons. You can decide if you want each chapter of the story individually, or if you prefer to binge, you can pick up the whole season… just like a TV series.

Continued directly from book 4: Jess and the Carnival Killer...

Jonny the Wolfman ran in and yanked the tent flaps shut behind him.  His eyes were wide in panic and he didn’t even notice the bodies in the room.  He asked, Are they in here too?  He was visibly shaking in fear.

Who? Harry asked. He was still standing next to Rodrigo and the burly man, just behind Lukas, who was on his knees crying over his dead brother Jonas. Jess and Katie had gone to comfort Loretta, who was still cradling the dead body of her insane charge, Ralphie the Big-Headed-Baby.

Zombies, man. There are zombies out there, attacking the patrons! Where have you been?  He cautiously peeked out onto the midway through a small gap.  

Harry rolled his eyes. Shit. This day is never going to end.

Jess couldn’t agree more.  Jonny, do you mean literal zombies?  Dead people walking around?

Just like the ‘Walking Dead,’ man! It ‘s the fucking ‘Night of the Living Dead’ out there!

Harry scoffed, Bullshit.  That’s just a television show.  Zombies aren’t real.

With perfect timing, a young woman came barreling through the front tent flap, screaming and almost knocking Jonny down. She had blood running down her arm, and she kept looking over her shoulder at something following her. Katie went over to her, and the woman clung to Katie like she was a life preserver in the ocean.  She was sobbing and saying something inarticulate that none of them could understand.

Katie walked the woman over to a corner of the tent, sat her down on a chair and grabbed a first aid kit that was hanging from one of the support posts.  She spoke soothingly to the woman as she cleaned up the blood with some antiseptic wipes and put on a bandage.  From what Jess could see, it didn’t look too serious.

Jess walked to the entrance, and carefully folded back the tent flap to see what was out there.

Seriously? was her only response.

Outside, she saw a short, rail-thin woman walking slowly down the midway. She, or it, was dragging its feet and lumbering along clumsily. She was dirty, with mud caked in her hair, and veins bulging out on her face. Her eyes seemed to dart around randomly, looking for something. Jess couldn’t say for sure it was one of the undead, but it looked like something out of every zombie movie she’d ever seen.

About ten feet behind it walked another one, a tall man in a suit that was so decayed it was almost falling off of him.  His lower jaw was only connected on one side and it was dangling from his face.  It swung from side to side with each lurching step.  There was no blood.  He looked dried out and a shriveled gray.  He was only wearing one shoe, and the bare foot was dragging so badly that it was worn down to the bone.  There was no sign that he felt any pain from his jaw or his foot.  It was surreal seeing someone in that condition moving.

Jess turned away from the flap to describe what she saw to the others, but she saw they were all there already, peeking from one flap or hole or another. It was almost comical seeing them all looking through holes in the tent like that, but no one was laughing.

Harry spoke first. Could this be some kind of performance art? Flash mob? Something like that?

Jonny said, That’s not makeup, man.  That’s freaking real!

Katie gasped. No!  Harry, don’t you recognize that woman? It’s Karen!

Harry looked again, this time nodding. Shit, that is her. Don’t know who the other one is though.

The woman with the wounded arm was standing next to Katie and
