    Chapter 1

Peter Summers moved with deliberation. The big, digital clock above his head never stopped ticking, relentlessly counting down the final seconds of the California Confectioners Pastry Competition. The Pasadena Convention Center had been turned into the perfect stadium, with six kitchen stations set up in a row, giving each competitor just enough room to create their masterpieces. Josh Boothe stole the occasional glance, but he didn’t shift his attention from the final touches of the chocolate statue. He didn’t dare. When he assisted Peter, the pastry chef expected—demanded—complete and total concentration. Nothing short of perfection would please him, but Josh could be perfect. For Chef Peter Summers, he could be better than perfect.

How’s that bird coming? Peter asked, without looking up.

    Good.

He didn’t need any other information. He didn’t want to know how much time Josh thought he needed. Good meant it would be done on time. Good meant Peter didn’t need to worry about his assistant. Good meant the bird’s wing was beginning to take shape, each feather of the wing finely crafted. This was the third time Peter had recruited Josh to be his assistant, but they had never taken the first prize in any pastry competition. Josh didn’t want to walk away with the silver again.

And there was no reason they had to. Peter’s design—elaborate and stunning—was unlike anything Josh had ever seen. The theme for the competition was love, and while the other chefs were focused on hearts, Peter chose another direction. Doves. One dozen dark chocolate doves and one dozen white chocolate doves, all different sizes
