For about the hundredth time that night, Travis’ instincts warned him he should cut his losses and leave. Actually, after browsing yet another row of books, quickly but thoroughly scanning each shelf and coming up short, everything in his body screamed for him to get the heck out of there. If he got caught breaking into the library after midnight, not making it into Beta Psi Beta would be the least of his concerns. He could get expelled, kicked off the swim team, heck, even lose his athletic scholarship. There was no way he would survive the wrath of his parents if he didn’t make it through freshman year, not him, the one son who had always lived up to the lofty expectations his parents had placed on him.
If he turned back now, maybe he’d already done enough to save face, especially considering Patrick and Kevin didn’t even have the guts to make it this far. After all, Travis was the only one the nerve to actually crawl through the open window of the library.
Maybe staying out with Patrick and Kevin was the smartest thing, because that open window waiting for him was about the only thing that had gone according to plan. Their instructions were cryptic, just a sealed envelop left waiting under his blanket when he made it back to his dorm. It had the frat letters on the front, nothing more. Inside was a handwritten note instructing him to sneak into the library at exactly twelve-ten that night, using a window that would be left open on the dark side of the building facing the forest. Inside was a wooden paddle with the frats letters branded onto the polished surface. Once they had the paddle, they needed only deliver it to one of their elder frat brothers. He had only one hour to find it. And above all, he was to remember to bring his spikes.
What the note did not say, and, frankly did not need to state explicitly, was they could not get caught under any circumstances; that was no different from any other challenge they’d had to complete over the course of the semester. It turned out that getting caught had been the single biggest reason why the frat dropped the pledges. Now there were only three left. Or, their had been three left, but committing an infraction that could lead to expulsion was where Kevin and Patrick drew the line. For Travis, he needed to earn his letters, keep his spikes, and become a full member of Beta Psi Beta Inc. There was no turning back.
The task seemed pretty straight forward, except the freaking library was three whole floors and he had no idea where the paddle could be. What seemed like plenty of time at first, even given the size of the building, now felt like precious little. Four times he roamed from top to bottom
For forty-five minutes, Travis had swept every isle three times over. The first two times he flew through the isles in a panicked rush. This last time, he had taken his time—to an extent—and made sure he had not missed anything. He just didn’t see anything that would match the description he had.
He successfully silenced that voice in his head that urged him to leave up until he couldn’t any longer. He had run out of time and now he needed to leave. The realization brought with it a weird sense of pride from the fact that he had not given in to his fear and instead saw it through. If failure to find the paddle meant he was kicked off the pledge line he could live with that.
As disappointed as he felt making his way back down the darkened passageways down to the first floor, he was relieved to be headed out of the admittedly creepy building. Now that he was leaving, the library was pretty uneventful, all things considered.
Well, that’s what he felt before he made it back to the dark hall that contained the window he had crawled through and saw it was closed. He froze, frowning as he cocked his head to the side as he began to doubt his sense of direction. Did he get turned around somehow? No, that wasn’t possible; he knew it was the right window because the clear view of the wide stairwell was clearly visible at the far end of the hall.
Thinking Patrick or Kevin closed the window at some point, maybe to avoid someone passing by seeing the open window and becoming suspicious, he hurried over to it and tried to pull it open. It was locked. And, his frown deepened, he didn’t see any way to actually unlock it.
Cupping his hands around his eyes, he peered out through the open glass hoping to spot his two rush brothers, but they were gone—even though they had promised to keep watch for him and alert him if there was anyone coming. The only thing visible from the window was the dense forest that surrounded the campus.
Darn it,
he breathed, his fear coming back in full force.
Stifling his growing panic, he rushed from window to window, trying every one on the first floor of the dark library. They were all locked. Checking the second or third floors windows were out
