About this ebook

Young Marty Spants was afraid to go to sleep at night. Not because he lived next door to the old abandoned house where Boo Bangles haunted. Something was in his closet that only he could see. It would take a plan, a good friend, a bully and a pranking ghost's desire for a good scare to unravel the mystery.

    Chapter 1

The attic bedroom was dark, which, considering the lateness of the hour wasn’t entirely unusual. Every night was dark. It was always that way when lights in the house were turned out for the evening.

What was out of the ordinary, though not entirely unusual was a wide ribbon of blue moonlight that shined through an open window at a disturbing angle without an invite. Stark against the backdrop of the dark bedroom, the celestial glow struck a glowing pattern across the bedroom floor as if spray-painted with a concise stencil. Where the floor stopped and the far wall began, the eerie pattern thrust upwards at a distorted angle like a defiant fist. There, clearly exposed in the bright glow of moonlight was a small bed covered with printed patterns of aliens and spaceships. Conveniently placed to the side was a small nightstand and a lamp shaped like football that was also a digital clock. A pair of well-used slippers sewn to resemble blue and gray space boots lay on the floor next to an oversized plush panda bear with a torn ear and a smudge of dried jelly on one arm.

On the bed was an assortment of pillows that were piled atop each other and burrowed deep beneath the bedcovers, twelve-year old Marty Spants held a flashlight in one hand and a metal baseball bat in the other. Barely breathing, he trembled like the thicket of quaking aspen that grew just outside his bedroom window.

It was nearly midnight, the witching hour, as his father often called the time, when everyone in Far Hollow knows that otherworldly things come out from where they hide. It wasn’t Halloween, but it could still happen. Marty knew. He’d seen them. Well, maybe not them or all of them, assuming they were a them; but certainly he’d seen something that couldn’t be explained.

They, them or it, he didn’t know which, were in the closet and they smelled something awful. When lights go out for the night Marty never thinks to go there. No sir.

    Chapter 2

In an earthen cellar beneath the old abandoned house next door to where young Marty held his nightly vigil in the dark, it was also dark; pitch black, and eerily quiet. Wooden shelves lined the sides of the small space, partially filled with old glass jars of preserved peaches. A few had fallen off the shelves and shattered on the dirt floor, due to rats that sometimes come down in the cellar. The smell of fermenting fruit filled the air, that and the pungent stale odor of dusty, old decay. Under a set of rickety, worn stairs that led upwards to a seedy unused kitchen above, a wisp of cold air stirred, pushing away a cloud of dust so fine it was barely noticeable in the dark.

Slowly, a faint glow of transparent blue appeared from the dark, changing shape as if it couldn’t make up its mind. Then the sound of deep breathing chilled the space
