Introduction
I'm delighted you've decided to join me to explore the wide and captivating world of humor and comedy. As we all know too well, life has no shortage of gravity. We’re constantly contending with responsibilities, stresses, frustrations and the like. But you know what has the magical power to lift our spirits when things get tough? Laughter! Even just a silly pun can provide a burst of delight in our day.
And while humor certainly makes life more fun, studies show it also yields measurable benefits. Belly laughs actually give our circulation and stress levels a boost, while sharing chuckles forges bonds between people. So laughter is truly a universal language that resonates across cultures. How sublime is that?
What is Wit?
From silly puns to satirical observations, wit encompasses all things clever in the realm of humor. It’s what elevates plain humor into the sharper, more unexpected flavor that underscores intellectual comedy. You know wit when you see it - it's that whip-smart remark that catches us pleasantly off guard. Oscar Wilde once declared wit to be the salt of conversation, not the food.
How right he was!
So what exactly constitutes this seasoning for comedy? Wit bubbles up in three key expressions, which we’ll unpack here.
Firstly, and most basically, wit lives in playful linguistic sparring. We’re talking puns, verbal irony and hyperbole. This breed of wit is all about toying and tinkering with language to comical effects by saying things contrary to expectation. For example, deadpan comedian Steven Wright knows just how to catch us pleasantly off-guard: I installed a skylight in my apartment...the people who live above me are furious.
Cue deliverance with an earnest deadpan expression. Witty wordplay like this manipulates language by using double meanings or exaggeration, revealing the elasticity and playfulness of words themselves.
Another signature spice in wit’s repertoire is crafting clever observations or insightful perspectives about everyday things that others miss. This wit gets layered in as astute satirical or socio-cultural commentary about life’s absurdities. Take Jerry Seinfeld’s legendary sitcom which revolved around amplifying oddball minutia most of us can relate to on some level. Who would have ever thought incompetent soup restaurant workers or quirky postal carriers could be so comedian gold? Or George Carlin’s witty social observations about humans’ curious customs. (If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done?
smirks knowingly) This brand of wit opens our eyes to over-looked peculiarities all around us, bringing thoughtful attention to things we mindlessly take for granted.
Lastly, an effortless, quicksilver tongue also epitomizes trademark wit. Think spontaneous, Improv-style repartee. Oscar Wilde himself had a legendary gift for exchanging verbal sallies with Victorian society’s brightest. Comedians known for razor sharp improvisation embody this vizier-level wit too. Their genius invites others into new perspectives through volleys of incisive remarks and counters remarks.
So in short, from wordsmithery, to satire, to improvisational artistry, wit is the keener, more refined edge of comedy that transcends everyday humor. It’s the mental agility to perceive what others miss – and describe it with sparkling irony, drollery or aid-deniable truth. Wit nudges perspectives; it doesn’t just bludgeon one into laughter like slapstick does. Perhaps that’s why the word wit
also means intellect and knowledge.
Make no mistake though.... While wit’s business is in exposing life’s delightful oddities, nonsense
