Chapter 1
The Importance of Confidence
Confidence is a trait that can help us face life’s experiences head-on. Many of us know what it feels like to carry out a task with assurance, while equally, it’s a common experience to feel a lack of confidence. In this book you will learn how you can build confidence. But before we go into that, let’s talk a bit more about what confidence is exactly and why it’s so important.
Is it a skill that can be learned? And how can we do that exactly? We’ll explore these questions and more in all the coming chapters. But first, let’s go over what exactly we mean with confidence.
What is Confidence Exactly?
Confidence, or self-confidence is like your attitude toward your own superpowers. It's about believing in yourself, trusting your abilities, and feeling like the superhero of your own story. Imagine it as having a control panel for your life where you know what buttons to push, understanding both your strengths and weaknesses. Having self-confidence means you're on good terms with yourself, setting achievable goals, and being cool with who you are.
Now, the flip side – low self-confidence. This is like having a little rain cloud following you around, making you doubt your own superhero status. It might turn you into a bit of a sidekick in your own story, passive and unsure. Trusting others becomes like deciding whether to share your secret identity. You might feel not-so-super, maybe unloved, and super sensitive to any critiques coming your way. It's like having kryptonite moments where your confidence takes a hit.
The thing is, feeling confident or not isn't about how truly super you are. It's more about how you see yourself – your perceptions. Think of it as wearing glasses that might be a bit blurry. Your thoughts about yourself, whether positive or not, can sometimes be a little distorted.
Low self-confidence? It's like having a foggy superhero mirror. Maybe you had a tough crowd growing up, or you're facing the challenges of solo superhero adventures. Being a little too hard on yourself can also dim your superhero glow.
Confidence vs arrogance
Some people mix confidence with arrogance, but these are two different things with a fine line between them. Confidence is about having belief and trust in your abilities and knowledge and seeing yourself in a positive light. Arrogance, on the other hand, is when someone believes that their abilities or knowledge make them better than others in some way.
Confidence vs self-esteem
These two terms certainly overlap, but there are differences between them. The concept of self-esteem relates to our perception of ourselves. Do we like the person we are? What do we think about our own strengths and weaknesses? Can we recognise our mistakes, and are we able to forgive ourselves for those mistakes?
Self-confidence is more about our belief in ourselves and our abilities. This can come from our direct or observed experiences, as well as a belief in our own hard work. A person can have faith in their abilities (confidence) but not like the overall person they are (self-esteem).
In this book, we mix them together. When I'm talking about confidence, I mean it in a broad way, so I'm also talking about self-esteem. It's about being a confident person overall – how you see yourself and how much you believe
