Chapter 1: Everything about the Liver

Understanding the basic anatomy and functions of the liver

The liver is a vital organ in the human body, located in the upper right side of the abdomen. It is the largest internal organ and performs numerous functions that are essential for overall health and well-being. In this subchapter, we will delve into the basic anatomy and functions of the liver, providing a clear understanding of its role in maintaining a healthy body.

    Anatomy of the Liver:

The liver is divided into two main lobes, the right and left lobes, which are further divided into smaller lobes known as lobules. These lobules consist of specialized cells called hepatocytes, which are responsible for carrying out the liver's functions. Blood flows through the liver via the hepatic artery and the hepatic portal vein, supplying it with nutrients and oxygen.

    Functions of the Liver:

1.Handling what we eat and drink

Sugar Manager: The liver is like a bank for sugar. When we eat foods with carbohydrates, they're broken down into glucose (sugar) in our bloodstream. The liver takes this glucose and stores it as glycogen. When our body needs energy, especially when we're not eating, the liver converts glycogen back into glucose and releases it into the bloodstream.

Fat Processor: After eating fats, they are broken down in the intestines and transported to the liver. The liver converts these fats into a form that can be used as an energy source or stored for future use.

Protein Helper: Proteins from our diet are broken down into amino acids and transported to the liver. The liver helps process these amino acids for energy use, making new proteins for the body, and removing nitrogen, a waste product of protein metabolism.

    2.Cleaning up the body

Toxin Filter: The liver acts as a detox center. It breaks down potentially harmful substances like alcohol, drugs, and chemicals from the environment, making them harmless or preparing them to be expelled from the body.

Ammonia to Urea: When proteins are broken down, they produce ammonia, which is toxic. The liver converts ammonia into urea, a much less harmful substance that is easily eliminated through the kidneys in urine.

    3.Making bile

Bile Maker: The liver produces bile, a greenish fluid stored in the gallbladder. Bile helps digest fats in our diet. When we eat fatty foods, the gallbladder releases bile into the small intestine to help break down these fats.

    4.Storing important stuff

Vitamin and Mineral Keeper: The liver acts as a storage unit, holding onto vitamins like A, D, E, K, and B12, and minerals like iron and copper. It releases them as needed to ensure our body functions properly.

    5.Filtering blood

Blood Cleaner: The liver filters the blood coming from the digestive tract, removing old or damaged cells, bacteria, and other debris before passing it to the rest of the body.

    6.Helping blood to clot

Clotting Factor Producer: The liver produces proteins called clotting factors, which are essential for blood clotting. This process is crucial for preventing excessive bleeding when we have injuries.

    7.Supporting the immune system

    Germs
