    Intend - Lara Wynter

    CHAPTER 1

    Misty

I walk up the busy street, my eyes scanning the buildings as I go. Surely, I must be nearly there by now, unless the directions the recruitment agency gave me were wrong. Ugh, I really need this job. My feet begin to throb as my stupid, cheap heels bite into my tender flesh. I feel so out of sorts in this skirt suit, but I need to do something to get myself out of my current predicament.

I take another step. Crack. My heel snaps off and I’m going down. My body tenses as a million thoughts flash through my mind. The main one being, how am I going to succeed in my interview now? My whole body tenses for the inevitable pain of body meeting pavement, when I’m brought up short. My body is swept up by powerful, undeniably masculine arms.

    Having some trouble there, sweetheart?

The deep masculine voice sends a shiver through my whole body. Knowing he can feel my reaction makes my face flush what I’m sure is a particularly unattractive shade of beet red. I make the mistake of looking up into the eyes of my rescuer. They crinkle at the sides as if he spends a lot of time smiling like he is right now. He has a strong jawline with a touch of stubble and what can only be described as kissable lips. My BFF, Julie, and I have a whole list of desirable traits, and kissable lips are right up there on mine. Not that I get to see Julie anymore. Not now that I made the stupid decision to follow Jake-the-jerk to Portland, and she’s still in Arizona.

I realize I haven’t replied, and he probably thinks I’m a bit slow, or odd, or who knows. He’s still smiling though, so maybe he just thinks I’m in shock, which I totally am, but not for the reasons he probably thinks.

You have really kiss- uh, um...I mean kind eyes. Just kill me now. This day is not going at all how I’d hoped. I’ve just proven myself to be the world’s biggest klutz and an imbecile as well.

Well, thank you! says the gorgeous young guy with a laugh in his voice. Your eyes are the most beautiful shade of blue or are they more green?

They change, depending on what I’m wearing.

Ah, I’ve heard about that. I didn’t think it was really a thing until just now. Huh, what d’ya know.

The neurons in my brain begin firing again and some semblance of logic takes hold. You can, ah, put me down now if you like? It comes out more like a question rather than a demand. I think a part of my brain realizes that this is as close as I’m going to get to a gorgeous hunky guy in the near future.

I’m quite comfortable as I am, he says, the mischievous twinkle is back in his eyes. Where are you headed? I’m Ryan by the way.

I’m Misty. And I’m supposed to be going to Xenos Records for an interview, but l can hardly hobble in with a broken heel.

Hmmm. Ryan’s gaze turns thoughtful. Never mind, you don’t want to work for them anyway. They don’t have the best track record, excuse the pun. He grins again.

Please, Ryan, can you put me down? As much as I’m grateful for the help you’ve given me thus far, I really need this job, so I’m afraid I’m going to have to at least attempt to make it to this interview on time.

Ryan begins to walk down the busy street in the direction I was headed. If I put you down now, you’ll probably break an ankle or something, and I’m afraid my mamma brought me up better than that. But don’t worry, I think I have a solution to both of your problems.

My mouth gapes open like a dying fish as we continue on down the busy Portland street. What does he mean he has a solution to both my problems? It’s hard to concentrate when a hot guy is carrying you down a busy street
