About this ebook

Absolutely comprehensive coverage of all aspects of the Prayer Life. This classic work was originally taught as a series in a church setting, but it easily lends itself to a free-flowing and informative read on how to pray correctly to have prayers answered.
Passages in the bible are handled expertly making the connection between our prayer life and our daily life.
In its third edition, this is the classic revival book that helped spark the 1994 Baptist REVIVAL in Rotorua City.

Extracts from the Book

"The greatest thing that we can do for God and man is to pray. We would no doubt accomplish more each day that is of value if we remained in communion with the living God. Just imagine what an army of prayer warriors could do in this nation. What actions would they set off? What strings would they strum that would vibrate like a sweet melody into eternity? What souls would be in Heaven because of such mission-minded musicians? Prayer produces fruit to our account. Prayer goes behind the scenes and works internally. Prayer is our secret, invisible weapon by which we can penetrate the enemy's territory and begin to reclaim it for God."

"And it came to pass, that, as He was praying in a certain place when He ceased, one of His disciples said unto Him, 'Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples." Luke 11:1

"Here, Jesus is shown to be engaged in prayer within earshot of his followers.  When He ceases, they are absolutely astonished to have heard this soul-stirring conversation with the Father above. "Lord, teach us to pray!"  This is the best request you and I can have when it comes to the prayer realm.  For if we are to pray correctly, we must be taught correctly, and what higher place of learning is there than sitting at the feet of Jesus, the Master? God must teach us to pray and to avoid the pitfalls. You might know all there is to know about prayer, but there is another world in being taught to pray by the Son of God. May we sit at Jesus's feet and say: Lord, teach us to pray!"

"The Father above is looking today. His eyes scan the crowds of believers, looking for those who will believe Him. He desires to find ones to stand in His presence, and to stand in the gap for the land. He calls to those who will call upon Him in truth, without reserve, expecting an answer beyond the possible. Will you be one of those people?"

The Pilgrim's Prayer Life - Pilgrim Preacher

The Pilgrim’s Prayer-Life: from the original series taught in the Baptist Church, Rotorua City, 1994.

Comprehensive coverage of all aspects of the prayer life.

Chapter One: Teach us to Pray

    ––––––––

And it came to pass, that, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, one of His disciples said unto Him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. Luke 11:1

Prayer should be the constant exercise of every ‘born again’ believer. It should have a large part to play in our lives, for it is the highest occupation of the pilgrim. It is our oxygen to breathe, an exercise vital for spiritual health and vibrancy. So, if you love your new life, be in love with prayer. Prayer changes things! Prayer alone moves those enormous mountains that human effort cannot even budge. Prayer will change you! Prayer will stir your heart, drawing you closer to the breast of Jesus, inviting you into the holy of holies, beyond the veil in Heaven. Make prayer an important part of your life. Let it be a first fruit; a daily delight, and not a hasty last-minute effort to avoid disaster.

With Christianity entertaining so many books on prayer, and with there being so much discussion on the subject today, I ask you how many Christians truly pray? How many pilgrims really bow in heart-rending, earnest, persevering prayer? How many have become fed up with playing and have begun praying? How many are causing Satan and his army of demons to tremble in their boots? How many of the faithful few are storming Heaven with their petitions? Looking at the condition of the world, I say, few are praying for labourers to go into the harvest. Few are weeping over sinners astray and dammed. Few are concerned; few are burdened; few are weary with crying over the sins of the people. God is broken over the state of things; why aren’t we? Looking at the condition of Christianity today, I say few are praying and reaching Heaven with their prayers. Lukewarm believers offer up cardboard requests. Carnal saints always cry out for themselves and weary God with their stout words. When pilgrims stop walking for a while to have a quiet time, they bow their knees for a few minutes, and then continue on without even having supped with the Lord.

Oh, let us pray! Let us pray without ceasing and let us pray fervently. Let us pray in the power of the Holy Ghost before the night comes and there is no more time to work and serve Jesus our savior. Oh look, believer, at the state of the Church today, and weep. Fast and pray that revival will come and shake this sin weary world before we go home. Revival begins in the prayer closet. Revival begins with YOU.

There is a great difference between what most Christians play at today, and the master’s labour of intercessory prayer. Let’s take a fresh look at prayer as we sit at the feet of Jesus, in the school of prayer. This book is dedicated to the aim of reclaiming the disappearing art of true prayer - prayer from the heart and not just from the lips. Here, we should learn some helpful tips to teach us how to pray. But it is my prayerful wish that you will ask the Lord to teach you to pray, just as His disciples did.

So, what is prayer? The word ‘prayer’ means ‘a wish’ – a wish directed up to God. Prayer is communication: speaking to God as naturally as you would speak to a human being. Yet it is more than just words – it is a soul drawn close to God. It is a hunger to be near the Lord; so close you can hear the beating of His heart. In David Brainerd’s diary, (missionary to American Indians, 1718 -1747) it reads in one extract, Had a sweet season in secret prayer: The Lord drew near to my soul and filled me with peace.

It is a craving to be with the Lord, and a grief to be absent from His close communion. David, the prayer-warrior said, Unto thee O Lord, do I lift up my soul. Prayer is a soul lifted up to God.

Prayer is to offer up our heart-felt desires to the Father, to receive things in agreement with His will, and in the name of Christ, accompanied by confession of our sins and a thankful praising attitude because of His abundant blessings upon us.

A simpler definition and one to which we will be referring to is:

Prayer is worship addressed to the Father, in the name of the Son, in the power of the Holy Ghost. (Learn this now)

And it came to pass, that, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, one of His disciples said unto Him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. Luke 11:1

Here, Jesus is shown to be engaged in prayer within earshot of his followers. When He ceases, they are absolutely astonished to have heard this soul-stirring conversation with the Father above. Lord, teach us to pray! This is the best request you and I can have when it comes to the prayer realm. For if we are to pray correctly, we must be taught correctly, and what higher place of learning is there than sitting at the feet of Jesus, the Master? What world acclaimed bible seminary; what university; what religious guru can ever hope to touch the hem of Jesus’ garment? God must teach us to pray and to avoid the pitfalls. Oh, you might know all there is to know about prayer - all the facts and figures - but there is another world in being taught to pray by the Son of God.

This prayer of Jesus caused the disciples to perk up their ears; to sit up and take note. Here was the Master, praying earnestly, bubbling over with fervency, His words ascending up to the throne with the Holy Spirit’s anointing upon them. Here, Jesus was praying in language that they could understand, in simplicity of speech. Every word was sincere; every word was sent up like a fiery arrow, too hot to touch by the militant demons. Except for the prayers of John, the Baptist, they had never heard such praying. Their ears were not used to hearing such delightful, heart-melting, soul-stirring, need-meeting, Spirit-led, Heaven-bound prayer.

When Jesus gave His great discourse on the mountain, surrounded by multitudes, He spoke on prayer. He exposed two groups of people whose verbal offerings did not even reach the clouds above. In Matthew chapter six, verse five, we read, And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward.

Here, these deeply religious people, these Pharisees, these models for the people were setting a bad example. Jesus denounced their eloquent speech; their flowery language that stunned the common man. They would stroll to the temple, stop in the street and give forth a prayer that made the people gasp, oh what a great man of God - I want my son to be just like him. They considered themselves utterly upright and beyond reproach, separate from sinners, and desiring a name for themselves they sought to impress people. But Jesus tells us to enter into our prayer closet, a private place, where we can pray in secret, and truly God shall reward us. (Matthew 6:6)

The other type of people is the Heathen. The ones who were worshippers, but in no way associated with the Jewish system, When ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Matthew 6:7

This group offered up repetitious prayers; long-winded; expecting to be heard because of the length of their chants: words rolling off the tongue, bypassing the heart. They honored a god with their lips while their heart was far away.

Pray as a pilgrim sojourning in this foreign land, which is in extreme need of intercessors. More prophetic voices are needed to stand in the gap, interceding for this nation. More ‘Philadelphians’ are needed to join the fight, storming Satan’s seat, bombarding the solid gates of this
