The Penis as You Age - William J. Lowry

    Chapter 1

Ways Your Penis Changes as You Age

Your penis is just one of the many parts of your body that age. The hormone that stimulates your sex drive and made your penis develop during adolescence, testosterone, starts to decrease in your testicles as you age. The aging process and other factors can alter the structure, size, and functionality of this vital organ. One such factor is the decrease in testosterone.

    ––––––––

    It Turns Gray

In any case, your pubic hair does. The pigment cells found inside each pubic hair follicle, similar to those found on your head, produce the melanin that gives your hair its characteristic color—blond, brown, or black. Your pubic hair goes gray or white as you age, melanin production decreases, and pigment cells die. A lot of the genes you receive from your parents determine whether the hair down there turns gray at age 35 or 65.

    ––––––––

    It Shrinks

The dreaded shrinkage! Declining blood flow to the penis can be caused by age-related conditions such as high blood pressure or clogged blood vessels (arteriosclerosis). Lower testosterone levels can also contribute to this shrinkage. Gaining weight can create the illusion of lost length. Folds of belly fat can partially conceal the penis, making it appear smaller than it is.

    ––––––––

    It Curves

Scar tissue develops on any penis injury, whether from sports, harsh intercourse, or an accident. You may have enough scar tissue accumulation by your 50s or 60s to cause your penis to curve or bow during an erection. Peyronie's disease is the term for the ailment. It can make having sex uncomfortable and is frequently painful. Treatments that range from injections to surgery can reduce the curvature and restore comfort in intimate relationships.

    ––––––––

    The Testicles Shrink

Your testicles shrink as you age because of decreased testosterone, the same factor that causes your penis to shrink. Reduced blood flow, injury, and the use of anabolic steroids (synthetic testosterone) can also be factors in the diminished size. Additionally, a smaller testicle may occasionally be a sign of testicular cancer. See your doctor if you experience any other symptoms, such as swelling, a lump, or a sensation of heaviness in one or both testicles.

    The Scrotum Sags

As you age, your skin naturally loses its elasticity. The skin covering your testicles can sag and wrinkle just like the skin on your face and neck. You can have scrotal rejuvenation surgery to give your sac a lift if the sight of a low-hanging scrotum bothers you too much to wear a bathing suit or if it hurts when it scrapes against your leg.

    ––––––––

    It's Less Sensitive

As you age, your penis naturally loses sensitivity. Thus, it can take longer and require more stimulation for you to become aroused and experience an orgasm. Don't touch the issue any harder if it prevents you from having sex since you risk irritating the delicate skin that covers this organ. Speak with your doctor about potential therapies instead.

    It Loses Its Spring

When you're older, erectile dysfunction becomes more problematic. By the age of 70, approximately 70% of men will
