Hermes Trismegisto

Hermes Trismegisto é uma figura mítica de origem sincrética cujo nome ressurge nos escritos dos neoplatónicos, místicos e alquimistas, sendo atribuído a uma entidade que tinha tanto do deus egípcio Thot, como do deus grego Hermes. Thot simbolizava a lógica organizada do universo e relacionava-se com os ciclos lunares, cujas fases expressam a harmonia do universo. Referido nos escritos egípcios como «três vezes grande», era o deus da oratória e da sabedoria, sendo naturalmente identificado com Hermes. Na atmosfera sincrética do Império Romano, deu-se ao deus grego Hermes o epíteto do deus egípcio Thot. Hermes é considerado o autor do conjunto de textos sagrados que contêm ensinamentos sobre artes, ciências, religião e filosofia – o Corpus Hermeticum –, cujo propósito seria a elevação da humanidade através do conhecimento de Deus. É pouco provável que todos os textos tenham sido escritos por uma única pessoa, mas representam o saber acumulado pelos egípcios ao longo do tempo, atribuído ao grande deus da sabedoria.
