"What are you doing? We’re not going in," Tobias blasted, keeping his volume low but issuing the order to his sister with all the intensity of a shout.

Standing at the edge of Farmer Johnson’s barn as she tried to pry open the door, Kira glanced at him in disappointment. Why not? Me and Freddie both think we should. Huh, boy?

Tobias shook his head. At twelve, he was older than his nine-year-old sister and their two-year-old dog put together, as he often reminded her whenever he leaned on his seniority to justify a decision. Today, he didn’t even bother with that.

Listen, he told her, I only let you come in case I got caught. It’d be easier to say I was playing around with you guys than it would be if Johnson caught me sneaking around alone out here. I never planned to go inside and I still don’t. Understood?

Kira hesitated. "I guess I just didn’t understand that my own brother was a chicken. I heard it was true, but I didn’t want to believe it."

Who said that? Tobias demanded, his demeanor changing instantly.

Okay, well how about me for starters, Kira went on. "I say it. I say… I say… you are a chicken. If I’m wrong, prove it." After the strong words, she further challenged Tobias with an exaggerated raise of her eyebrows.
