About the Author
Chapter 1
Rob sat at his desk. As he negated his pen, he turned and started to walk to the bay window when there was a rap at his door. Rob turned as his mother burst into the room.
Robert, what is going on?
Rob took her hand. Mother, calm down,
he said, walking her over to the window. What do you see?
Looking out, there was an actinic view—green hills with a stream winding through the meadow. Then as she started to turn, movement caught her eye: something was in the thickets. It was a doe with her fawn going down to the stream.
She sighed. "Yes, Robert, it is so serene, but what are we going to do? You're the CEO. There is a problem that has to be faced.
Mother, the Lord has everything under control. At the moment, we will pray and leave it in his hands. I heard that my sister will be here tomorrow,
he said.
Yes,
she said, they have asked Joyce to be at the meeting in the morning.
It has been so long, and she left without us settling our problem. I meet with the board at 10:00 a.m. We will find a solution. There is something amiss, and after tomorrow, I think we will have a better idea of how to proceed.
Robert, Joyce is coming over for dinner tonight. It would be a good time for the two of you to talk. We will have dinner around 6:00 p.m.
Mother, I don't see how I can make it tonight. I have paperwork to go over before the meeting in the morning.
Okay, Robert, but if things change, we'd love to have you.
*****
Mom, do you think that whatever is going on had anything to do with Dan's death?
No, honey, I know something is wrong, but why do you think it would have anything to do with your husband's death?
I don't know, Mom. I just don't think it was an accident for some reason…
I didn't know you felt that way, but, Joyce, there was nothing that we know of in their report indicating anything amiss.
I know, Mom. Maybe if I would have been here, it wouldn't have happened. It's just that I miss him.
It's only been five months
How much longer before I quit crying myself to sleep?
Honey, it was hard for me when we lost your father. The only advice I can give is to try and think on the good times you had. Maybe that will help.
That's what I do. That and being active in the church.
Remember that some doors will shut in our lives. If you have the Lord in your life, he will open another one. Pray and ask for his help and guidance.
Joyce sat at the kitchen counter, sipping her second cup of tea as her mother set their plates and silverware on the table.
Mrs. Rollin turned. Well, I was hoping Robert would come to dinner tonight, but I know he has a lot on his mind with the meeting coming up in the morning.
*****
Rob looked at his watch. I still have an hour before the meeting. I wonder if Joyce will be there. It seems so strange. The company has been doing so well over the years. Then when we get a government contract, everything starts falling apart.
As Rob walked to his car, a black SUV pulled up. The window rolled down.
Joyce said, Robert, please get in. We need to talk.
Joyce, I need to be at the office. We have a meeting at ten,
he said.
I know, I have to be there too. Please, get in. I'll take you and we can talk.
Joyce, I have been wanting to talk to you to ask for your forgiveness. When father passed away and I had to take over the company, I pushed you away thinking I knew best and didn't need any advice from you. I know I hurt you and completely understand your anger and why you left.
I am asking for your forgiveness also, Robert. We were both going through a hard time. You are my brother, and I love you. I know you were only doing what you thought was the right thing to do at the time. Rob, I do not think that Dan's accident was really an accident. I know that the government had sent him here as a consultant for their contract as an overseer. Dan was CIA. When you started having problems, they sent Dan to make sure you were not being sabotaged.
Joyce, I'm so sorry. I knew you were married, but I didn't know Dan was with the CIA.
No one knew that Dan was CIA. Don't say anything to anyone that you know. Dan had a close friend. They worked together over the years. His name is Frank. I have contacted him, and he should be here in the next day or so. We need to find a way to get him a job in your company. Dan told me you would be moving back as soon as you had taken care of business there,
Joyce said. Yes, it took longer than either of us thought it would. Rob, as I told Mother that night, I feel like it's my fault. If I had been here, Dan would still be alive.
Joyce, you can't blame yourself. We have no control over what happens in our lives. I know we like to think we do, but remember God has complete control. And even though we try, unless we are out of fellowship with God, not always, but sometimes down the road we see and understand why some things happened.
Okay, but I still need a shoulder to cry on once in a while.
Chapter 2
Frank stepped off his yacht onto the pier. He stopped. Looking around, he thought this was quite a surreal-looking place. At the end of the pier was the town sign: Welcome to Granite Cove.
Joyce had contacted him, telling him to go to the coffee shop just past the Seal Bar and to be there at 10:00 a.m. As Frank stepped onto Main Street, he stopped. There was no hustle and bustle like in the city. A few people were
