Tea Magic Essentials
Introduction
Embracing Teacraft
The path to Heaven passes through a teapot.
– Ancient proverb
At the root of witchcraft—and most other holistic ideologies—is the understanding that all natural things have a magical energy ripe for manipulation. Since the beginning of time, there have been people who have sensed and understood this metaphysical energy. From cooking to healing, from witch to medic, these people used flowers and herbs as their greatest tools. But they saw the bountiful resources of the earth not just as ingredients that could feed them or make the impossible possible; they also knew them to be their greatest teachers when it came to the secrets of the universe. To them, the forests, streams, flowers, and animals were worth listening to.
When we begin to listen to the earth, we learn to feel that magical force passing through all things. Then, once we've given it the recognition it deserves, we can even discover how to harness it. It's with that energetic working of a flower's essence, an herb's purpose, and even a crystal's vibration that we can manifest things we desire and even repel the things we don't.
Tea: The Wallflower of the Botanical World
Botanicals, minerals, and fruits get a ton of airtime in books about both physical and spiritual powers. Be it culinarily or medicinally, many of the plants on this earth have been used by healers, shamans, witches, midwives, foragers, cooks, and bakers alike. And yes, even grandma could find herself on this list—whether she wants to admit it, baking her cookies with love is kitchen witchery at its most delicious!
But there is one wondrous natural resource that doesn't get the credit it deserves: tea. There's no better start to the day and no better nightcap before bed. Many of us have a memory of a loved one bringing us a steaming cup of tea to comfort us during a cold. I know my children always crave tea with honey the moment a tickle forms in their throat!
But have you ever wondered where this association between tea and healing comes from? Is this a new-age phenomenon or has tea always been a cherished remedy? And have we just scratched the surface of this drink's holistic potential?
From homemade herbal infusions to the tea sachets on the grocery shelf, so many flavors, types, and varieties of tea make themselves accessible to us. I think it's high time we harness this resource's energy, all while enjoying a delicious treat!
Witch's Brew: Unlocking the Magic of Tea
Tea takes the vast, powerful essence of herbalism and fits it into the bottom of a mug. Having the ability to truly taste the magic working under your fingertips makes it all the sweeter, all the more tangible. That is how we can harness magic, by taking the time to explore with, listen to, and reconnect with our senses.
Whether the classic five physical senses—sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell—or those extrasensory perceptions that lend themselves to that gut feeling,
it's through our sensory experience that we can connect to the mystical undertone of the universe. Imbuing your tea with magical intention and then consuming it makes it all the easier for you to connect to its power.
Convenience and Accessibility
Tea magic embodies the spirit of ancient herbalism but with a modern twist— we don't have to go out and forage for the herbs ourselves! Just go to your local grocery store and nab an infusion that aligns with your intention. Do you desperately need jasmine but you ran out? Find some jasmine tea in your pantry and cut open that tea bag! The tea market's growing popularity can negate the need to visit a metaphysical shop or spend oodles of money to ship an online order. You could even peruse the coffee and tea station in your job's breakroom to get a feel for what flavors you like. In truth, a robust tea collection is practically its own apothecary!
Some witches may feel a need to hide their metaphysical work, especially if they live with someone who is against magic. For these practitioners who need to be discreet, tea magic might be easier to do than more overt activities like making spell jars or burning decorated candles. Try out a new coffee or tea shop and do some kitchen witchery on the go— like stirring your coffee with intention. Casting a spell under the guise of enjoying a warm beverage will help you practice without raising suspicions—all while getting to enjoy a good brew. That's what's so beautiful about tea magic— anyone can practice it!
More Than a Cold Remedy
As versatile as tea is in flavor, it's equally as versatile in its usage! Its most famous holistic use is, of course, healing. Besides giving us a warm, comforting feeling, tea has certainly earned its healthy reputation; during its humble beginnings in 2737 BC China, it was initially regarded as a medicinal drink! In more modern times, decades of studies have concluded that tea can actually reduce the risk of heart disease, discourage the growth of malignant cells, and remove toxins from our bodies (Souter,
