It is about a Villages Existence Which was an Endless Struggle for Survival. Things Were to Come to a Head as it was Thought a Prophecy of a Killer Winter was About to Happen.
This Gripping Story is Told by Wolf; the son and Survivor of the Norse Village. This Compelling Adventure s Story is a Must Read for Teenagers and Adults Alike.
Chapter 1 - Creative thinking
I am Wolf, 20 years of age and the only son of our leader Bo. Our village was in Norse, just into the Artic circle on the coast and comprised of 120 Norse people and 80 slaves from the land across the sea to the south west. Our people were tall, fair (white haired) with piecing blue eyes.
Our existence was tough, we mainly ate fish, moose, and the occasional artic fox. Our biggest enemy, however, was the winter, the cold would drop to minus 35c with winds that seemed to cut right through you.
As a group, we would pillage, the lands across the Norse Sea to the south west, once or twice a year during the summer, captured people would work as slaves in the village; we had about 80, male and female. During the raids we would steal anything of value and any livestock.
From our knowledge of where we lived we were the only people there; no other person was ever spotted, we were the masters of our kingdom. Inland from our settlement about 2Km to the east was a vast forest, its prime inhabitants were a large pack of wolves 40 plus. They would kill without notice and seemed unafraid of groups of adults.
My name Wolf came from an unlikely incident. I was on my own near the tree line and could hear a lot of commotion. A young wolf had it leg trapped and was unable to release itself. Standing next to the wolf was another youngster – I assumed a sibling. Being rather over confident, or stupid I approached the wolf as I felt I might be able to help. I was unaware; the wolf pack were in the treeline, unobserved by me but watching me attentively.
My main concern was the sibling, who was baring its teeth and snapping as I approached. The injured wolf had it leg wedged between some boulders and was unable to get into a position to pull itself out. I approached; the sibling was quieter although still baring its teeth. I really did very little, I simply grasped the trapped wolf and lifted him, enough to get his leg free. I then rubbed the injured leg for a short while. The wolf and sibling, probably a brother, just left. It was then I noticed the pack, I realised what danger I was in and stood, frightened – momentarily unable to move.
As the pair approached the pack a massive wolf moved forward, obviously pleased to see the pair were ok. In an instant the pack vanished into the woods; I made a very speedy retreat, back to my village.
Some days later I was at the seashore, helping put newly caught fish into a basket. The others were making their way back to the village and I was washing. As I turned, sitting there was the wolf I had helped along with its brother. I threw them each a fish which they ate with great relish.
I stayed where I was; the wolf who I helped moved forward and sat close beside me. I made no attempt to stroke it but carried on with my wash. From then on whenever I was on my own; both wolves would appear and, literally followed me everywhere. Hence my name became Wolf.
My father did not approve of the wolves as he did not want to do anything to attract the pack to our village. I received a rather stern telling off; we never discussed the issue again.
I had named the wolves Shadow and Little Shadow and I liked them a lot.
There was a prophecy that was often recalled about a giant storm that would come from the north and it would kill everyone. Although it was spring, I kept having a re -occurring nightmare that this was the year of the big storm, and we were all going to die. I spoke with my father about my dream, to my surprise he was very attentive.
I’m sure my father had discussed this with other members of the village as the matter had concerned him. We were alone together one evening and my father said Son, I have been giving your concerns about the storm a lot of thought. We will reenforce the northern perimeter of the village this year and make early preparations to build up a big supply for food and fire fuel. I must remind you this story is a prophecy and is unlikely to ever come true. I am prepared to take reasonable precautions we will prepare
.
I nodded and replied yes father
I could think of nothing else to say. If my dream came true merely strengthening the northern perimeter of the stockade would not be enough.
I had another nightmare about the storm, and I decided to think what I would do. Our village was built in an ancient riverbed, through the middle flowed a stream which eventually went into the sea, about 4km away. On route to the sea there were hot springs, in fact so hot you could not bathe there. Inland the ground raised and there were caves. It was in this area by the hot springs I had a plan for us to build a shelter that would survive the mighty storm.

The love of my life was Freya, not only was she very tall and beautiful she was clever. She had learned the language of the people we had as slaves and spoke their language well and was always good with practical ideas. I spoke to her about my nightmares and she seemed genuinely engaged about finding a solution.
Weeks passed by and there was a meeting of all in our village. The purpose was to discuss a forthcoming raid on the people across the Norse Sea in the south west and some other matters. The day came for the meeting; food was available in good quantity and there was a superb confidant sprit amongst us all. A date was set for the first raid, we would take two boats – my fathers and mine this enables us to take 60 fighters with space for captured prisoners and livestock. My father had a body guard – a fighter through and through, he was massive and the most fearsome person I had ever seen; his name - Arena. He had two sons who were about the same age as me – both good fighters and my closest friends.
Just when we thought my father had finished his briefing he stood again and said your attention
there was silence.
He continued As you are aware there is a prophecy, a great storm will come and we will all die. My son Wolf is convinced it will be this year. So far there are no signs that anything is different. On our return from our raiding mission, we will start to make some preparations. I know my son is expecting more.
My father looked at me – he could read me so well – he added Wolf, if this is not to your liking you have my blessing to leave and make your own preparations; anyone who wishes to join my son may do so and; we will all help you
.
I was lost for words, I felt awkward all I could say was thank you father
, I walked forward and kissed his hand. I added in a quiet voice let’s hope the prophecy never comes true
.
My father smiled and said nothing – there was no need to.
The meeting did not really end, we carried on eating and talking until late at night -I had lots to think about. Freya was the first to speak on the break away idea and said Wolf I will join you
She was closely followed by the two brothers, my good friends and the sons of Arena my father’s bodyguard. They said We are with you and we have our fathers permission, he said you need someone to look after you.
We all laughed.
Over the course of just two days 25 people were on board – I had a team and perhaps in future a mini village of my own.
I told my father that we had 25 people who would come with me,
