Chapter 1
There's a place where the rivers flow quietly and the fish swim freely, where all the sounds around you bring a peaceful and tranquil feeling to the land, Most people you meet here are as pleasant as the next and as helpful as you would like them to be. This place has a name, others call it the Argian valley, I like to call it home.
I am part of a hunting community that lives within the Argian Valley, we are just one of many tribes in these parts and survive the best we can.
We are a civil tribe that will help almost anyone who needs it, we go about our lives oblivious to the evils and wrong doings of the world. We like to live life each day as it comes.
My name is Mickel, I'm an Argian younger aged Seventeen. I am son of Colias who is an Argian fisherman and also part of the tribal Elder's. The
Elders are those who know most of our history and try to ensure we all do what we can to survive.
I like to class myself as a friendly person but a competitive person, this can often lead to some over excitement on my behalf, well more than often if I tell the truth. I’m quite tall for my age and quite well built, that’s mainly down to the physical work I have to do and also the amount of food I eat. As an overview of life here, it’s pretty good.
I often ask myself why would anyone want to leave or live anywhere else? Each day goes by happily and merrily without many problems, well not many serious problems that is. It doesn’t stop me thinking what is outside of the valley though.
The only real worry that my father and I have in life is to ensure that we catch enough fish to supply the village with food for the upcoming winter.
We are a Northern valley village on the coast line of the Northern Seas. The Northern Seas are vast and dangerous, in the summer they are full of sharks and in the winter they are a treacherous ice field. Many have ventured out in both seasons and have never returned. To the west of the valley we have the Wolf Mountains, These are named so after the tribes that live there. The Wolf Mountain tribes will raid villages, kill and steal whatever they can in order to survive. They behave, act and hunt like wild starving wolf packs. They are a tribe that are feared by most in our valley. They seem to show no fear and don’t resent any actions that they undertake against others.
To the east of the valley is the dark woods. These are no place for any normal folk to live, some do live there but not many, most that do live there are tribal outcasts and bandits, these are people who would steal or kill their own kin to survive and would show no remorse or regret for their actions. It has been said the spirits of the damned also roam these woods. As children we use to dare each other to step inside the woods, it’s said if you disappear from sight then you are never to be seen again. I have only ever placed one foot into the woods, this was years ago when I was much younger and foolish. When I did this I heard a crying and whimpering noise which suddenly turned to a loud whaling scream. Hearing that made me turn and run home as quickly as I could whilst shivering with fear the whole way. I often thought about doing it again but never seemed to get up enough courage to do so, even though years have now passed and I am a lot braver than what I was I would still never go back into those Woods.
To the south of the valley are the Wastelands. These are a dry and hot desolate land, most that leave the valley tend to travel across the waste-lands as it’s said that it’s the only direction of which you can travel out of the valley by avoiding the Wolf Mountain Tribes and what lives in the Dark Woods. So people believe that the wastelands hold the fewest dangers. It is said the further south you travel the hotter it gets, if you can survive the hot dry environment and any dangers along the way then you would eventually come to a place called Paradise.
I don’t know what Paradise is to others but to me it’s here in the valley which is where I hope to stay. The Elders say there’s no place called Paradise after the wastelands, if there was such a place then why have none returned to tell us about it?
A lot of people in the valley believe all who enter the wastelands don’t survive it and they become part of it as they die in the heat and decay becoming part of the dusty sands. Hearing stories like that is what makes most of the northern tribes stay where they are, besides, I like life here in the Valley. One thing I don’t like about my life here is the fishing life in the winter. When the winter comes it’s impossible to break the ice in search for fish and we can’t go out on the boat. We have to brave the harsh weather and dangers of breaking the ice on foot, this leaves us searching for hours or even all day. Most of the time this leads us to finding no food at all. That’s the main worry in the winter, no food. This is why we have to stock up on food before winter arrives, this puts us under pressure in the warm months to ensure that we get enough fish stock while we can. Villagers will surely die without a good winter supply.
One Day I was resting in my room when I suddenly heard my name being called out several times. Mickel, Mickel, come we must get a start as there's not many morning light hours left’. That's my father, Colias. ‘
coming father I replied, ‘father why all the worry, we have plenty of stock to cover most the winter already.
‘You can never have too much stock son, as you will learn in your elder years’. I rushed to get ready, as my father is not a man that you want to keep waiting for long. I accidentally left him waiting at the boat once for thirty minutes and felt the wrath of a sore ear for an hour or so. About time Mickel
sorry father.
My father and I head of down the path towards the docks, the same time every day we leave our house being polite to any villagers that we come across. We always show respect to those that we meet along the way to the docks as father believes that one day any folk you have ever showed respect to will always offer you help should you ever need it in return. This I understand but sometimes I would like to grunt or not even answer but Father is very well respected in the valley so I have to do what is right.
My Father is one of the few men of his age that survived the storm of death. This was a devastating winter storm which hit the valley when I was a mere child. That is the storm that changed my father’s whole life as it took the life of many villagers including my mother. Many believe that it was a storm sent by an evil warlock or an unnatural beast on the hunt for fresh bodies to feast on. I just believe it was a severe storm which we were not prepared for as a tribe and as such lost my mother to it.
We let the Elder’s continue to inform us on their beliefs but most of us younger children pretend that we’re listening, however we are usually all thinking about other things.
We don’t go fishing daily on own, we have one other person that comes out with us. It’s only a hundred or so paces from my house to this person’s home. Father when we get there shall I knock on Athian’s door?
Athian is my best friend. Yes son, you know how he is with his sleep
. Athian and I are nearly the same age. He was born one summer after me but we still have a lot in common. We are the best of friends and we are very hard to separate. After the short walk down the path we arrived at his house BANG BANG BANG
I knocked the door as loudly as I could trying to make sure he hears it, I got no response from knocking the door so I had to start shouting his name, I made sure that I shouted as loudly as I could, ATHIAN
I shouted it several times but there was still no answer. I look to my father and spoke Father he seems to still be sleeping’
leave him son, I’m sure he'll catch up with us before we set off.
With my father saying that I started to walk away from his door and we continued to head down through the village into the woods. We have a small woodland just before the docks. These are not a scary woodlands but normal woods, they also as a wind breaker from the northern seas. The docks hold all the small fishing boats for the village. There are plenty of us that fish for the village and surrounding areas.
After a short walk we eventually arrive at the docks, Aargh there she is, the friendly vessel of our living.
We always prepare the boat in the evening ready for the next day so we can get right to it. It also helps as father’s usually too grumpy in the mornings to be dealing with unwrapping nets and tying knots. We just arrived at the boat when we could hear someone calling our names from behind us.
Mickel, Colias wait for me.
Of course my father and I both knew who it was. I shouted at Athian to Hurry come on Athian
there was a slight pause before his response, sorry about that Colias sir I was just stirring in my waking minutes and didn’t hear the door.
Yes, Yes Athian I’m sure that you were.
Come now you two we must set off before the sun rises too high.
Father believes the best fishing times are while the sun is low in the sky, I think he just hates it when it gets too warm. He’s normally quite bossy at set off time as Athian and I are usually in silly or jesting moods.
I do know that the early light hours is the best time to get out into the water, so I don’t test his patience too much.
So after ten minutes of jest and a lot of shouting from my father we finally set sail towards the edge of the reef in search for some Fish. We try to focus on the larger fish as a good day’s catch can feed the village for the week.
The villagers mostly rely on the fish hauls as the wild animals and vegetation are getting short on supply. Father says the soils don’t seem to be as good and therefore less vegetation which results in fewer animals.
He feels the pressure and does what he can to support the village. I often think of travelling out of the valley in search for fresh farming areas but the Elders have always advised against it, this sows fear of the unknown in to our minds from a young age.
After sailing for an hour we decide to drop the nets and sit in wait. Sometimes we have to wait for several hours which normally results in boredom settling in, and boredom usually leads to trouble, well for one person it usually leads to trouble.
Suddenly Athian jumped in the water making a huge splash, he’s not the slimmest of lads so you can imagine the noise that he made when he did this.
This enrages my father and he shouts Athian, get out of there now before a shark gets you
With the sound of that he soon started to swim as fast as he could towards the boat. The thought of a shark scared him too much to take the risk. There are many types of Sharks here in the summer, most are large and try to eat anything that moves near them.
We fear the Largest Sharks the most, we call them shriekers due to the noise they make once they have attacked and start eating their prey. They toss it into the air and jump out of the water to take the bites.
While doing this they make a horrendous shriek, which once heard will put enough fear into any man yet alone us younger ones. Seeing one would never make you want to enter the water again, this is why the number of fisherman in the village is low. It is also the main reason that we use long wide nets to catch the fish as they reduce the splashing and limit the attention to the sharks.
Father again shouts at Athian ‘how many times have I told you not to do that in the deep waters, now get out
Athian looked up from the water feeling sorry for himself and whimpers a pitiful sorry
, but just as He was about to climb on to the boat, he quickly disappeared under the surface.
Seeing this I panicked and so I started to call out his name. Without even thinking about It I jumped into the water. I was frantically searching for him everywhere, I couldn’t see him, I took another good deep breath and swam deeper into the water to continue searching.
Each time I ran short of breath I surfaced for more air and continued diving under the water several times. Finally I located him and swam as fast as I could towards him, I noticed that he was trapped in one of the nets. I took out my knife and started to cut at the net to get him free. My knife isn’t the sharpest but it manages to cut through the
