For the Ranger’s of the Colville Confederated Tribes

For three summers, I worked for my Tribes as a Park Ranger. I worked the whole Colville Indian Reservation but my main responsibility was Lake Roosevelt. En route to the lake, I often passed through Friedlander Meadows.

Friedlander Meadows is a beautiful place: green, plush with a creek running through. It’s not quite high enough for fir trees but there is plenty of pine. The problem is the cow shit all over the road. There is no way to get around it. It gets so thick that the tires of your truck will slide and splatter everywhere. Do you know how hard it is to look professional with cow shit splattered all over your patrol truck?

In Friedlander Meadows, the cows are everywhere. At first, I despised the cows. The youngest bolt in front of you and the old ones stand in the middle of the road. They stand and chew and pay you no mind. Before they eventually move, the cows take time to shit out just a little bit more.

As time wore on my attitude changed toward the cows. They are slow and dumb and defenseless. I could stop my truck, pull out my rifle and do away with any one of them. Anyone could.

The smallest were playful though they seemed to outgrow their brains.
