    A Fisherman’s Philosophy

I’m not a learned man you see

    I haven’t read many books

    Still who needs education

    For baiting nets and hooks

I know my work is humble

I’m not handy with a pen

    We can’t all be philosophers

    We must have fisherman

I don’t know law nor grammar

And it’s hard to make words rhyme

How can I think and worry

When I’m busy most of the time

I guess we need the scholars

Still there’s other things to do

While they figure out the problem

    I’ll be making oyster stew

What is the purpose of this life

    To all mankind his place

    Here, everyone cannot be first

But some must win the race

I don’t brood while others gain

One day I’ll make my haul

    Give everyman his honest due

    There’s plenty here for all

    A Mother’s Advice

A mother was scolding a daughter,

She called her a heartless young flirt

Although the girl knew she deserved it

She looked quite offended and hurt

Her mother accused her of slighting

    An honest laborer’s hand

And midst her anger and pleading

    She said daughter dear understand

Your steps won’t be always so springy

Your eyes won't always be so blue

Your hair won’t always be so golden

Your friends won't always be so true

They’ll spoil you because of your beauty

But once let your beauty be gone

They’ll leave you for other idol

They’ll cast you out once and for all

The lecture at last was all over

And all to a mother’s surprise

    Two hearts were united forever

And all through a mother’s advice

Violets may wither and pansies will decay

The rose, from your cheeks, my lass will fade some day

    Those that fond and flatter
