Welcome to Your Tube: A guide to nutrition through a feeding tube. This book aims to empower individuals who are reliant on feeding tubes to confidently navigate the intricate world of nutrition. By understanding the fundamentals of a feeding tube and recognising that nutrition through a tube can still be delivered with love and flexibility – as it is for those without feeding tubes – a tube-fed person can overcome their fears and jump into the driver’s seat to advocate for themselves and ensure their optimal wellbeing.
This book is designed for the adult tube-fed person who is living at home and is medically stable. It should not be taken as a substitute for professional medical or dietetic advice as every individual’s medical condition and nutritional requirements are unique, but rather as a means to empower tube-fed adults with knowledge they may not have had the capacity to absorb before leaving hospital. A recent scientific publication defined individualised nutrition care for tube-fed people in the community as inclusive of discussions of the type of tube, method of administration (pump, bolus, intermittent), feeding regimen and the types of feed
. The authors also emphasised that counselling on options available can empower them to make choices and enable them to alert healthcare professionals when issues arise that could be managed by altering aspects of feed choice
(Holdoway et al. 2022:4). And that is exactly what this book has been designed to do: empower you with the knowledge of options.
