    Chapter 1

Tiffany Carlisle was on a mission. She walked with a brisk and dogged determination through the Upper Manhattan offices of Modern Woman magazine, past the row of grunt workers in their cube farm, and towards the hallway that led into the posh editorial offices. The steely look of career-inspired aggression in her eyes sent a silent signal to all the bubble-headed college interns and staff writers not to approach her lest her stiletto heels step on them.

She made a quick detour into the company media library and only wasted a few precious seconds before resuming her advance to the Executive Publisher's office, now with a stack of magazine back issues tucked securely under her arm.

Deep in rehearsal mode for what could be the defining audition of her young editorial career, she almost didn't notice someone had fallen in next to her and was matching her pace.

Going for it, I see, a voice came, startling her. Tiffany cut her eyes over to her friend Allison, who their little staff clique had probably elected to dig for information.

Going for it and will get it, Tiffany responded coldly. It was the same raw confidence she'd displayed since college when she and Allison shared a dorm room their freshman year.

She'd earned a reputation then as being a go-getter, someone who would plot and scheme to get what she wanted. Her Type A personality had served her well both socially and academically. She'd had an almost perfect grade point average and had been pursued by the most exclusive sorority on campus. Men flocked to her like flies to honey – something she'd taken advantage of quite often, earning her an additional, though quite different, reputation.

This came way too easy for her, most of her friends thought. Her skin was a golden hue, and her smile could brighten any space with its radiance. Her jet-black hair fell in waves around her face, framed by almond-shaped eyes that hinted at her Middle Eastern heritage. Men fell all over themselves to be around her and did just about anything she asked of them.

    And she asked a lot.

Confident and assertive, she was a natural leader in her college's newspaper office. Her relentless pursuit of the truth and her tenacity to dig into stories made it no surprise that she was offered an Associate Editor position at the world's #1 magazine for women as soon as she graduated.

Same plan we discussed last night or have you found another angle? Allison asked, perfectly aware Tiffany may have had a brilliant last minute change of plans.

Tiffany rolled her eyes. She could imagine the corporate rumor mill starting already, the whispers in the mailroom, and the eventual blog posts.

Same, Tiffany replied. Now go tell all the bitches in editorial they'll soon have a new boss.

O… K…. Tiffany said, grinning and veering off their path just as they'd reached the large oak office door at the end of the executive hallway. Tiffany put her hand on the door handle and then hesitated. Not quite knowing how to proceed, she decided to knock instead of walking right in. Closing her eyes and taking a deep breath, she rapped on the door right below the nameplate, which read 'Victoria Chancellor, Executive Publisher.'

Imagining your name there? asked a strong voice behind her, making Tiffany jump and spin around.

Christ, you scared the fuck out of me!

Victoria Chancellor stood proud and imposing like a Sith Lord, her immaculate power suit wrinkle free, her long blonde hair grayed only slightly at the temples. She had been with the magazine since its mid-seventies conception, and although her style of leadership was not always popular, it could not be denied that she had made it the powerhouse publication it is today. After Amanda Forrester's death in 1998, Victoria became Executive Publisher, her icy presence forever looming over the office.

Such language from a young lady, She casually remarked, arching an eyebrow as she opened her office door to let the two of them in.

The office was very swanky, with shag carpeting and wall paint that matched the color scheme of Bliss magazine's logo. Lining the walls were framed covers featuring some of the most famous women of the last three decades. Tiffany recognized many of them from her high school collection, back when she had to hide them under her bed so her mother wouldn't throw them out. There was Madonna, Raquel Welch, and Cindy Crawford. Others came from her time at the magazine, like Jessica Alba, Taylor Swift, and Britney Spears. Imprinted on each cover in bold, colorful letters were the titles of the articles that kept young women coming back for more each month, like Late Night Sex, Five Bad Girl Moves You Must Try, and Naughty Orgasm Tricks.

The office furnishings were no less impressive. Victoria had an antique desk and a leather chaise lounge chair facing a fireplace.
