    Dedication

I would like to dedicate this book to my amazing wife, Youdlyne Chery Louis, for her immense support and unconditional love. Lynn, I would like to say thank you for believing in me and trusting me. This book is also dedicated to my two beautiful daughters, Danielle and Deborah Louis, for their patience and understanding while I was working on this project. Girls, you are the source of my motivation; Daddy will always love you. This book is also dedicated to my wife’s family, my relatives, and all my brothers and sisters in Christ who have shown their support to my family during my wife’s illness. This book serves as a testimony to the world that your prayers were heard and answered by God. My family and I will always be grateful to each you who stood by Lynn during her fight with cancer. Finding enough words to thank each one of you would be arduous. I pray God continues to pour out His generous blessings on you. May this book serve as a reminder of your selfless love and tremendous support for my family.

    Preface

One of the most intriguing aspects of life is that surprises always cross our pathways: both good and bad. My surprise came around the eighth year of our marriage. Before we digest it, let us return to March 23, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. We had gathered in the church where Lynn and I first met, before 250 people including family members and friends, and we both vowed to love and cherish each other from that day forward, for better or for worse; for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us part, according to God’s holy ordinance. Eight years later, the foundation of our union was tested; the snares of death entangled our marriage. As a husband, I felt powerless; as a father of two wonderful children, I felt hopeless; but as a child of God, my eyes were lifted to the hills. After months of trials, fears, and tribulations, our faith was indeed weathered. Yes, Lynn is cancer-free because God Did It! This book shares the story of my wife’s diagnosis with aggressive cancer. I discuss my experiences of caring for my wife while taking care of two children in the midst of a pandemic.

I write this book to inspire and encourage those who are sick, to let them know that Jehovah Rapha is still the same today. He has not changed; He is the same God yesterday, today, and forever. The miracles that occurred in the Old Testament in the time of Moses are still possible today. My wife, Lynn, is a prime example of God’s miracle-working power today. The same Jesus who called forth Lazarus from the dead is alive today; He is not dead. The same Jesus who healed the woman with the issue of blood after twelve years of misery and lamentation is still healing today. You must have faith and believe in Him.

Also, I write this book to encourage caregivers like me to know that their mental health matters, too, and that they are not alone. I want to remind caregivers that their self-care is as important as the care they give to a loved one. No one can pour out from an empty cup; to give, you must learn how to refill your cup.

I was taught early on in life that sharing is caring. I am almost certain that you are not the only one experiencing the struggles you are currently going through. I am positive that somewhere in this world, someone else is experiencing a similar problem—or even worse. Oftentimes, in the middle of our sufferings, we think we have it the worst, that nobody else could have it as bad as we do. But no, you are not the only one. I can guarantee you that somewhere in the Caribbean, a mother is watching her child die due to lack of medical care. Or somewhere in Africa a father is starving and going to bed hungry along with his family tonight. I am not minimizing your problems, but sometimes when we think we have it bad, we can think about those who are less fortunate than we are. Having a spirit of gratitude in the middle of your suffering will give you hope to persevere in life.

There were many reasons to be grateful to God amid Lynn’s sickness. Though she was coping with breast cancer, she had the financial means to get her chemotherapy treatments, and that is a huge reason to thank God. Though I was emotionally affected by my wife’s illness, I never felt abandoned: God never left my side for a moment. Also, I was grateful for the support and help of family members and friends. When we share our adversities and we are vulnerable with one another, our loads become lighter, and we become stronger to face our hurdles.

Whether you are caring for a child with a disability or you are a spouse who is taking care of an elderly parent with dementia, I want you to know that God is aware of your troubles; He has not forgotten about you. As you lift your eyes to Him, He will come to your rescue. May this book serve as guidance and an inspirational tool for you.

    Acknowledgments

Nobody has been more important to me in the pursuit of this project than my wife, Lynn. She is the definition of a best friend. She is a true warrior and the backbone of our family. Her determination and strength stimulated my inspiration. This book would not have been possible without her support and encouragement. I am grateful that God put her in my life, and I cannot imagine living one second of my life without her. I also would like to acknowledge my
