J Alan Erwine

J Erwine was born Oct. 15, 1969 in Akron, Ohio. Early in his life he was exposed to science, and specifically astronomy. From there on, J's passion turned to science fiction, a passion that's never died. Due to family issues, J eventually found himself in Denver, Colorado, where he still lives (well, right outside now.) From the time he could put subject and predicate together on paper, J has been writing stories. None of those early stories exist anymore (thankfully), but that passion for writing has never waned. After several years of rejection, the story Trek for Life was eventually sold to ProMart Writing Lab editor James Baker. It wasn't Asimov's, but it was a start. Since that time J has sold more than forty short stories to various small press publishers. In addition ProMart also published a short story collection of J's entitled Lowering One's Self Before Fate, and other stories, which is still available. ProMart also published a novel from J entitled The Opium of the People, which sold a few copies before going out of print. The relevance of the novel after the events of September 11th caused J to self-publish the novel, as he felt the story had a lot to say in the new reality we now find ourselves living in. Now, this same book has been re-released by Nomadic Delirium Press. Eventually J would become an editor with ProMart. Then, after the untimely death of ProMart editor James Baker, J would move on to ProMart's successor Sam's Dot Publishing. J also spends most of his time working as a freelance writer and editor. J's novel was voted a top ten finisher in the 2003 annual Preditors & Editors contest, and his short story The Galton Principle won a ProMart contest for best story over 5,000 words. In addition, a number of his stories have been voted "best of" in various issue of The Martian Wave and The Fifth DI… and have been included in Wondrous Web Worlds Vols. 2, 3, 4, and 6. In 2009, the Ephemeris Role Playing Game was released. J is the co-creator of this game, and has written numerous supplements for the game. J has now sold three novels and four short story collections, all of which are still available from various sources, including Smashwords. J currently lives with his amazing wife, three wonderful children, three cats, and a very quiet turtle.

Random Encounters of the Radioactive Kind - J Alan Erwine

    Introduction

This book contains 50 random encounters that are ready to be inserted into any Rocks on the Other Side campaign. You’ll find encounters with beasts, and troops, and just about anything else you might want to throw at your characters.

Each encounter gives you a brief description of what is about to happen to the characters. It also gives you the stats for whatever the characters are facing and what rewards they can get for the encounter.

Feel free to add them in to your campaign as they fit with whatever you’ve designed, or you can just use them as random encounters to enhance game play.

The encounters are divided by levels with the encounters getting more and more difficult as you get further and further into the book.

As with everything we release for this game, feel free to use the encounters as they are, or adapt them however you need to fit with the game you’re playing. Our main goal is to help you have fun while playing Rocks on the Other Side.

Attack of the Many Legged Ones

    Level: 1

The party finds themselves rummaging through an abandoned house that is on the verge of collapse. So far, they’ve found a $5 dollar bill, a Swiss Army knife, and a canteen, but not much else. Unfortunately for the characters, something is about to find them!

After one of the characters picks up the canteen, all characters must make a spot check with a CS of 14. Those that fail their check will not notice the 4 giant centipedes that are attacking. At this point, initiative is rolled between the characters that succeeded on their check and the centipedes. When it is the centipedes’ turn to attack, they will try to attack any characters that failed their check. This will allow them to attack the characters that are not able to use their agility bonus because they are surprised, and it will also grant the centipedes a +2 attack bonus. Also, since the characters are surprised, they won’t be able to use any bonuses that they might get if they’re carrying a shield.

Each centipede has 6 health points.

Once the centipedes have been dealt with, the characters will find 3 AA batteries, a hatchet, and a compass.

    We’ve Got a Roach Problem

    Level: 1

The characters have found the remains of a camp site. Whoever had been camping here seems to have left in a hurry as they left behind two sleeping bags, binoculars, a can opener, a compass, and a two gallon container full of gasoline.

While the characters are examining this stroke of good luck, their luck will quickly turn bad as 5 mutated cockroaches attack. They will attempt to attack with surprise, requiring the characters to make a spot check against a CS of 12. Those that fail their check will not be able to use their agility bonus or any shield bonus that they might have. Those that succeed on their check, now roll initiative against the roaches.

The roaches will attack whatever character is closest to each of them, not caring whether the character has been surprised or not. These bugs will not retreat, so it will have to
