    Introduction

Deep in the shadows of manipulation and deceit, monsters dwell. I’m not speaking of the grotesque monsters that we see on horror movies and creature-features. I’m speaking of human monsters. Yes, they exist. They are the predators of society, and they linger, menacingly, in the underbelly of society. I highlight such monsters in The Monster Pack: The Wasteland, which is Book One of The Monster Pack series. In this chapter, I chronicle the personal demons of the kids that make up the Pack. I describe their unfortunate circumstances (dealing with neglect, abuse, deceit, and rebellion). This is to inform the reader of such real-life nightmares.

The kids form a Pack. This is their way of taking a stand against these monsters – for themselves – as well as for other hopeless victims. For them, this is the call to action. The monsters are the criminals, such as Mr. X., who is a ruthless Drug Lord, and Grotesque, a monstrous entity that commits unspeakable crimes in the Dream World. The loyal henchmen, bodyguards, and mind-controlled minions add to such crimes. These monsters come in many forms, one of which is Human Traffickers. You will meet this prominent monster in The Monster Pack: Soulle Island (Book Two of the series). Criminal Mastermind, SinTao is paying a visit to the town of Cleveland, OH. His business is anything, but pleasure, and the Pack will be thrust into the biggest battle of their lives. In the Town of Serafin Falls, The Soul Drawer has returned, and is more lethal than before. It’s up to the Pack to save the town before it becomes the island of lost souls.

Of course, human trafficking is no mystery. Yet, the inhumane and unethical crime of humans being forced into labor and slavery continue to rise. The International Labor Organization reported an estimate of 40.3 million human trafficking victims globally, it a $150 billion industry worldwide (PolarisProject.org). The fight to end human trafficking continues as more people join the battle to end this nightmare and help victims find the courage to step out of the shadows and free themselves, as well as be the voice for other victims. Diane Coates of Cleveland Rise! is one such advocate, who strives to be the helping hand and voice for those victims who are rendered speechless and hopeless.

In my works, I tend to travel the horror-fantasy realm. I like to experiment with crossbreeds, merging human beings with other lifeforms, whether it be extraterrestrial, spiritual and demonic entities, or other creatures and monsters of various sorts. When I think of monsters, I think of humans because of the atrocious acts we hear about in the news with the hard criminals that roam about. Mrs. Coates approached me with an interesting concept for a story tackling human trafficking, and she inspired and encouraged me to write and be the voice of the victims, as well as, shining a light on these crimes. The journey to The Monster Pack: Soulle Island was paved.

The Monster Pack will spawn across numerous series, introducing new characters, protagonists and antagonists in each installment.

    Welcome to The Pack

An Introduction Into The Monster Pack Universe

The Monster Pack takes place in the present day but interweaves between the present day and the past. In The Wasteland, the year is 2016, and it travels backward to chronicle different events that are relevant to the foundation of the story and the structure of the characters.

In the Real World (Cleveland, OH.), we meet the young teenagers that would later make up the Pack. These kids are all going through personal struggles in their lives (neglect, ridicule, abuse of all forms, depression, and rebellion). In order to escape their harsh realities, they drift away into a Dream World – which is supposed to serve as a haven – but has also become riddled with monsters of its own.

The Real World also introduces secondhand characters, such as the kids’ parents and other characters that aid in the story buildup and the shaping of their characters and paths. The Dream World (the Town of Serafin Falls) becomes its own town when the kids transition over. In the Dream World, the kids become enhanced versions of themselves. They become superheroes, acquiring special abilities that aid them in battling the monsters that inhabit the town. The Town of Serafin Falls was once a live and vibrant town until it was hit with a rash of child abductions that threw the town into darkness and despair. The residents of the town placed blame on a select few societal rejects, and banished them into the Dark Forest, where they become rogue and feral, and turn into monstrous beings that then begin to torment the town.

In the Real World, the kids are at odds with human monsters; their neglectful and abusive parents and guardians, their peers who are gangsters and violent bullies, and the criminals that roam the streets. In the Dream World, they battle the monsters that linger in the shadows of the Town of Serafin Falls.  In The Wasteland, in the Real World, Jacqueline Ingram is abducted by the ruthless drug lord’s, Mr. X’s, henchmen, and she is held captive and tormented in his secret warehouse. The kids must race against time to find her and save her. In the Town of Serafin Falls, JackyBOMB is abducted by Grotesque and held captive in his lair, where she is tortured by him. The Pack must race against time to find her, save her, and escape the Wasteland before they become trapped there forever.
