Chapter 1 - The Calamity

The morning sun rose over suburbia, casting a warm glow through the windows of the Williams family home. Alex stretched and rolled out of bed, glancing at the time - 7 AM, right on schedule. Down the hall, he could hear the muffled voices of his children James and Emily already bickering as they got ready for school.

Chuckling to himself, Alex started the coffee brewing and set about making breakfast - eggs, toast and fresh orange juice, the kids' favorite. As tempting as it was to lounge in bed a little longer, his duties as a father called. Besides, he looked forward to these simple rituals, a chance to connect with his loved ones before the busy day ahead.

After three tours in the Navy, Alex had settled into civilian life as a software engineer, savoring the comforts and stability this suburban neighborhood provided. While he missed the adrenaline and camaraderie of his military days, raising a family here fulfilled him in new ways. His home was his place of refuge from the world's troubles.

Or so he thought.
