About this ebook

Unbeknownst to the general public is that many physical and mental disorders correlate to an imbalance between the stimulating neurotransmitter glutamate and the calming neurotransmitter GABA. In this book, I share my glutamate-related tribulations, which plagued me for most of my life, and explain how I finally achieved peace of mind without using dangerous pharmaceuticals.

Regretfully, people of all ages are suffering needlessly. Parents have no idea how severely glutamate and GABA imbalances affect their children's lives; OCD is a classic symptom. Still, I can tell you from personal experience that they are miserable and confused because they have no idea why an uneasiness accompanied by terrible thoughts constantly plagues them.

Sadly, parents, pediatricians, and school teachers complicate the issue by telling them to think happy thoughts and they'll be fine. No one afflicted with a glutamate and GABA imbalance can wish it away; only following a strict protocol designed around safe, natural supplements, clinically tested and proven to lower glutamate levels and raise GABA levels, will do that. I wish I had known then what I know now; my life would have been so much better!

Examples of the many illnesses correlated with a glutamate and GABA imbalance include the following:

OCD

Superstitions

Anxiety

Panic

Phobias

Learning difficulties and poor memory

Anger and aggressive behavior

Depression

Autism

Seizures

ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)

Schizophrenia

Bipolar disorder

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease)

Multiple sclerosis

Alzheimer's disease

    Preface and Introduction

Various illnesses and diseases are associated with a malfunctioning central nervous system. Mental illness is one such illness that often goes undetected because its symptoms are frequently assumed to be normal human behavior. Conversely, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, for example, are not normal behaviors. What appears to be harmless habits, such as nail-biting, overzealous ordering and arranging, hoarding, and impulsive cleaning, are caused by an imbalance of the stimulating (excitatory) neurotransmitter glutamate and the calming (inhibitory) neurotransmitter GABA. Furthermore, an imbalance between those two molecules is the reason for nearly all illnesses and diseases affecting the central nervous system.

For much of my life, I suffered without relief from several disorders caused by glutamate and GABA imbalance. Finally, those days are behind me; I'm finally at peace. Severe anxiety, OCD, ADD, social inadequacy, extreme panic attacks (resulting in several trips to the emergency room), superstitions, fear, learning and memory difficulties, and multiple phobias no longer haunt me. My doctor's suggestions and prescriptions did not help, so I fiercely searched for the cause and solution, finding both. This book tells my story and reviews the many illnesses related to glutamate and GABA imbalance. Also discussed are alcohol's effects on brain chemicals, various drugs (including DMT), supplements, and foods.

    Chapter 1

Glutamate: The Demon in My Head

The topics addressed in this book include the following and more:

    OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)

    Superstitions

    Fear

    Panic

    Anxiety

    Learning difficulties/memory

    Anger

    Phobias

    Autism

    ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)

    Depression

All but three of the afflictions listed above haunted me for most of my life, and I desired more than anything to relieve my distress somehow. As a child, I didn't know where to turn for help, and my parents ignored my calls for it because they couldn't imagine that something other than myself was causing me to experience the things I did.

So I suffered through childhood with no help at all. I attempted to explain what was going on to my father, but his reply was always the same: It's all in your head; in other words, he was telling me that it was self-inflicted and all I had to do was ignore the negative thoughts and concentrate on positive ones. Well, that sounds simple enough to someone who hasn't experienced what I was, but it was not that simple; it was complicated and scary and had negatively impacted the quality of my life.

My issues were often present, varying from mild to severe. Later in life, and still desperate to find a solution, I sought help from my family practitioner. He prescribed a serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI), which I took for a couple of years, but it didn't help, not even a little bit. He adjusted the dosage several times, but I still suffered from the abovementioned issues. So I quit taking them, which was a wise decision. But the withdrawal caused panic attacks beyond imagination, even though I gradually tapered down the dose, and that's because the SRIs cause changes in the brain that affect serotonin receptors. While a person is using SRIs, the brain downregulates the number of serotonin receptors as a defense mechanism; it protects itself from overstimulation. As a result, there will be fewer receptors, and that causes a
