Modern Day Psalmist - Jeri Lynn Strong

    Book One

    PSALM 1-41

    Psalm 1

How blessed I am, how blessed the man

Who finds his way out from the world

Whose thoughts are consumed both day and night

By the delightful law of the Lord ~

He is like a tree planted next to a stream

Bearing fruit each season to come

Withering not, in the heat of the day

Being blessed in whatever he’s done ~

But for the wicked, this is not so

They are driven like chaff in the wind

They will not stand before the Lord

All covered in filth by their sin ~

For the Lord knows the path of the ones that are His

As He guides their steps with His hand

But the wicked will perish for turning away

And trusting in the things of man ~

    Psalm 2

The kings of the world are devising a plan

They are coming together as one

Exalting themselves above all that is God’s

Saying, Let’s break from these chains and run! ~

But the Lord, on His throne, is laughing at them

    Mocking their futile desire

In His anger, He’ll speak and terrify them

Breathing a breath full of fire ~

"I am the Lord, I have chosen a King

Who is seated upon Holy Mount Zion"

"If he asks, I will give him the ends of the earth

To shatter with a rod of iron" ~

"Now therefore, I warn you, O kings of the earth

Be wise and worship the Lord"

"Lest you kindle My anger against you again

And receive your fateful reward!" ~

    Psalm 3

O Lord my foes are surrounding me saying

Where is your God to be?

But You are my shield, You are my God

And Your glory, my eyes will see ~

To the Lord I cry out and He answers me

    From upon His holy hill

With a touch of His hand, he comforts me

And whispers, peace be still ~

I will not fear all my enemies

Who surround me on every side

Arise O Lord, and deliver me!

In Your shadow I will abide! ~

    Psalm 4

Hear my call, O my righteous God

Give me relief, and hear my prayer

O men of the earth, how long will you turn

To false gods and be unaware ~

Know that the Lord has set apart for Himself

The chosen, the ones that are His

Do not sin in the midst of your rage

Be still and search within ~

Offer Him sacrifices of your heart

And trust Him with all of your might

Let Your face shine upon us, O God

Your face that is full of sweet light ~

You have given me joy that is greater than when

New grain and new wine abound

I will lie down and sleep in Your safety, O Lord

Only in You, can all this be found ~

    Psalm 5

Listen O Lord, as I cry out for help

O listen, my God and my King

In the morning I lay my requests at your feet

And wait joyfully for what You will bring ~

You do not delight in the evil of men

And You hate all that is wrong

But I, by Your mercy, come into Your house

And You fill my heart with Your son ~

The wicked are filled with destruction and death

With their tongue they speak deceit

Let their desires cause them to fall

O Lord, cast them out in the street ~

But let all who take refuge in You be glad

Let them joyfully sing their song

For surely, O Lord, You bless and surround them

With Your favor, like a shield so strong ~

    Psalm 6

O Lord, do not be angry with me

Be merciful, for I am faint

Heal me, Lord, for my soul is in anguish

How long, O Lord, must I wait? ~

Deliver me with your unfailing love

For what good am I if I’m dead?

I’m all worn out and my eyes are weak

From weeping all night on my bed ~

The Lord has heard my cry for help

    The Lord accepts my prayer

My enemies will be ashamed and dismayed

They will turn back in sudden despair ~

    Psalm 7

O Lord, my God, I take refuge in You

From all who would do me harm

But if this guilt be upon my hands

Then remove me from Your strong arm ~

Arise O Lord, let the people all come

And rule over them from on high

O righteous God, search our hearts and minds

And replace the wrong with all that is right ~

My shield is the Lord, who saves His own

He is righteous in every way

He will sharpen His sword and aim His bow

At the wicked and send them away ~

I will give thanks to the Lord, He is holy and true

And He stands for all that is right

I will sing praise to the name of the Lord my God

I will sing praise to the Lord, Most High ~

    Psalm 8

O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your Name

    In all of the earth

You have set Your glory in the highest place

From all lips Your praises are heard ~

When I consider the work of Your hands

When I consider the stars and the moon

What is man that You care for him?

And give him glory and honor to consume ~

You let him rule over the work of Your hands

You put everything under his feet

Flocks and herds, beasts and birds

And all of the fish in the sea ~

O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name

    In all of the earth

You have set Your glory in the highest place

From all lips Your praises are heard ~

    Psalm 9

I will praise You, O Lord, with all of my heart

I will tell of the wonders You’ve done

I will be glad and rejoice in You

And sing praise to Your name, Holy One ~

My enemies have turned, for you upheld my cause

And judged righteously from Your throne

You’ve destroyed the wicked, blotted their names

And made rubble of their cities of stone ~

The Lord reigns forever, the righteous One

He is refuge and strength for the poor

Those who know You will trust in Your name

Those who seek You will find You once more ~

Sing praise to the Lord for all He has done

For He hears the afflicted cry out

See my enemies, O Lord, and have mercy on me

That I may rejoice and Your praises I’ll shout ~

The nations have fallen into a pit

And their feet are caught in a net

The Lord is known by His justice, so true

That the wicked shall never forget ~

    Psalm 10

Why, O Lord, do You stand far off?

Why, O Lord, do you hide?

The wicked man hunts down the weak

The wicked reject You with pride ~

He says to himself, I will never fail!

His mouth full of curses and lies

He lies in wait like a lion in cover

All Your ways, Lord, he does despise ~

Arise, O Lord, lift Your hand, O God

Break the arm of this wicked man!

For You are the Lord, who cares for the weak

And with You, the fatherless stand ~

    Psalm 11

The Lord is my refuge, so why do you say

"Run as far as you can!

The wicked are coming with bows and arrows

To shoot at the righteous man!" ~

The Lord in His temple, the Lord on His throne

    Observes the sons of men

And the wicked will suffer for all that they’ve done

For the Lord, He loves justice, Amen ~

    Psalm 12

Help me O Lord, for the godly are gone

    And the faithful have disappeared

    Everyone lies, spreading deceit

I’m afraid that the truth has been seared ~

But the Lord will protect the needy and weak

His words are flawless and true

Like silver refined in a furnace of clay

    Purified seven times through ~

    Psalm 13

How long, O Lord, will You forget

And hide Your face from me?

How long must I wrestle with my thoughts

And run from my enemy? ~

Look on me and answer, O Lord, my God

Give light to my dreary eyes

Lest my enemy says, I have overcome him!

And my foes rejoice at my demise ~

But I will trust in Your unfailing love

I will trust in Your mighty hand

I will sing to the Lord, for He has been good

I will sing it across the land ~

    Psalm 14

Fools say in their heart that there is no God

They are corrupt and their deeds are vile

There is no one who’s good, no not one

The Lord searched over every mile ~

He looks down from heaven to see if there

    Are any who understand

But all have turned away from God

All who live in the land ~

O Lord, will these people ever learn?

Why don’t they call on Your name?

There they are overwhelmed with dread

And covered with guilt and shame ~

But the Lord is a refuge to the poor

    Salvation comes from the Lord

Let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad

In all that our God has restored ~

    Psalm 15

Lord, who may dwell in Your sanctuary

Or live on Your holy hill?

He who is blameless and does what is right

And no slander from his lips will spill ~

He who keeps his oath, even when it hurts

And lends money with no interest taken

He who does all of these things

Will never, ever be shaken ~

    Psalm 16

Keep me safe, O God, I take refuge in You

Without You there is no good thing

As for the saints who are in the land

They bring delight and make my soul sing ~

The sorrows of those who chase other gods

    Are destined to only increase

But the Lord has assigned me my portion and cup

It’s in Him that I truly find peace ~

    I will praise the Lord
