My name is Jaya Prasad, and writing has always been a means for me to express myself. I am an introvert by nature, thus i prefer to express myself via writing rather than speaking to others. The narrative of  Rishi and Vidya is based on certain real-life situations that i saw, but it is entirely fictitious, and any resemblance to any of the characters is purely coincidental. This is the first part; the second will follow shortly. Thank you, Jaya prasad. Jaiprasaadh2@gmail.com Https://www.instagram.com/jprassad

    VIDYA IN AMERICA

"T he price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it."

    Henry David Thoreau

Life and time walk hand in hand; life never stops for anyone or anything. It has been nearly nine years since Rishi last met Vidya. He is in constant touch with his friend Rohit, but there was not much news about Vidya. Every now and then, Rohit used to ask Sheela about Vidya because only Sheela was in touch with Vidya. The last time Rohit asked Sheela about Vidya, she said that Vidya’s uncle wanted Vidya’s mother and her younger brother to come to the U.S. as he had completed his graduation and could continue his higher education staying with them. Vidya's uncle, Mr. Sailesh Kumar, is well-settled and doing business in America. He was the one who provided financial support to his sister Revati (Vidya’s Mother) and her family after the sudden demise of his brother-in-law, Mr. Harsh Kumar (Vidya’s Father). Vidya’s father, her pillar of strength, expired just a month before Rishi met her the last time. It was Vidya’s father's decision to send her to the U.S. for higher studies, so it became Vidya’s responsibility to fulfill his last wish. Vidya did not want Rishi to know about the death of her father and her financial situation, and that was the reason she stopped Sheela from telling anything to Rishi or Rohit, although Rohit came to know about this later; he did tell this to Rishi because he also felt the same thing.

It has been nine years since Vidya went to America. She completed her master's in business and was working with her uncle Sailesh. She was earning well and wanted to tell her mother and uncle about Rishi. On the arrival of his sister Revati, Vidya’s mother, Sailesh talked to her about Vidya’s marriage plans. Revati told him that it would be Vidya’s decision. Sailesh was very impressed with Vidya and wanted Vidya to marry his only son, Rakesh. When Vidya came to know about this, she was stressed because she would not be able to reject that marriage proposal.

Rakesh was a fun-loving, happy-go-lucky guy and was also good with Vidya. When he came to know about it, he became very tense and wanted to meet Vidya. Vidya also wanted to talk to Rakesh about this matter. Rakesh asked Vidya to meet him at the nearest coffee shop to discuss this. Vidya said she would be free in the evening and meet him. However, Rakesh asked Vidya not to tell his dad about this matter. Vidya already knew that Rakesh had a girlfriend but did not know how serious he was about that relationship.

    RAKESH AND VIDYA'S CONVERSATION:

    Rakesh: Hi Vidya.

    Vidya: Hi Rakesh.

    Rakesh: Vidya, coffee?

Vidya: Yes, but first, tell me the reason for calling me here.

Rakesh: Vidya, don’t you know the matter? Revati aunty did not tell you anything.

Vidya: Yeah, I get it, about the marriage.

    Rakesh: What did you say?

    Vidya: What should I?

Rakesh: Vidya, what was your answer?

Vidya: Nothing, I just ignored it. What about you?

Rakesh: I do not know what to say, Vidya, please help me.

Vidya: How can I help you?

Rakesh: You just reject the proposal.

    Vidya: No.

Rakesh: Are you happy getting married to me?

    Vidya: No.

Rakesh: Vidya, you know that I love Ritu.

    Vidya: Are you really serious?

Rakesh: Why did you get that doubt?

Vidya: Are you really asking me this?

Rakesh: Come on, Vidya, this time I'm serious; it's pure love (pakka love).

Vidya: Then just go and talk to uncle about this.

Rakesh: What? He will kill me. You know he likes you so much.

Vidya: I know that, and that is my problem too.

    Rakesh: What should we do?

    Vidya: I don’t know.

Rakesh: You are my only hope; if you say no, then he cannot force you. He will be forced to say, Okay, beta (dear), as you wish.

Vidya was drinking the coffee when suddenly she felt some pain in her stomach, and she went to the restroom. Vidya came back after 10 minutes.

    Rakesh: Vidya, are you okay?

    Vidya: I don’t know.

    Rakesh: What happened?

Vidya: I was feeling some kind of pain in my stomach, might be some food poisoning.

Rakesh: Vidya, let's go to the doctor.

Vidya: Seriously, it's just stomach pain. Let’s go home, and I will take some rest, and it will be fine, okay?

Rakesh: No. Just do as I say. Wait here; I’ll get my bike.

Vidya: Rakesh, no need for all this; it’s nothing serious.

    Rakesh: Are you a doctor?

    Vidya: No, but...

Rakesh: Then don’t try to be one.

Vidya: Okay, but just listen to me.

    Rakesh: I will.

Rakesh picks his bike and indicates Vidya to join him.

    Rakesh: Let’s go.

Vidya: Rakesh, sometimes you just act like a kid; you just don’t understand.

Rakesh: Sometimes you need to act like a kid.

Rakesh and Vidya reach the hospital.

Vidya: Now just stay here; don’t come inside.

    Rakesh: Why?

Vidya: Don’t act stupid; I am a girl.

    Rakesh: So what?

    Vidya: Rakesh.

Rakesh: Okay, just go; don’t forget I am here.

Vidya: Vidya went inside, just nodding her head.

Vidya went inside and met the doctor. It was Dr. Reena. Vidya came outside after nearly 25 minutes. Rakesh was waiting for her. Just when she reached Rakesh, a nurse came towards Vidya and said, The doctor wants you to wait for some time and take the reports. Vidya said, No problem, I will come tomorrow and take them. Tell Dr. Reena I will call her. Thank you.

Rakesh: Let’s wait for some time and collect the reports. What were you discussing for so long? Is everything all right?

Vidya: No, I mean nothing serious; the doctor just wanted to run some tests.

    Rakesh: Okay.

Rakesh and Vidya reached home, and Vidya thanked Rakesh. She said, "Don’t
