Deep down, I know I need her more than I'll ever admit.

Broken Ranger's Redemption - Amber Ford

    Chapter 1

    (Miles)

    ______

    ––––––––

Unit seven, do you copy? Christian asked in a low voice.

We are all gathered in a small room, wearing comms and trying to guide a team on a mission.

We hear you loud and clear, sir, one of them says.

They’re young, new, and prone to rash decisions. Right now, they’re on an extraction mission in Canada. But that could quickly go sideways.

Good, I state, leaning closer to the computers and screens in front of me. Do you have eyes on the target?

Negative, another one of them replies. It’s too dark.

Dumbass, one of my friends sniggers from behind us.

We all turn to see Nick standing with his earpiece in his hand, which means the guys at the other end didn’t hear what he said. I glare at him before turning back to the computers.

Use your infrared glasses, captain, Christian says through gritted teeth.

It can be frustrating guiding the newbies on their mission. There’s no reply for a few seconds.

All right, we’ve got eyes on the target. Three guards surround him, and two more are placed outside. That’s all we can see, but it’s safe to assume there’s more.

    Chances of entry? I question.

We’re going to have to scale the building. But we’ll need a distraction on the outside. Something to lure some of these men away.

What are your orders about the guards? Elliot, another one of my friends asks.

The use of lethal force, but only when the target is safe and sound.

Okay, then, Nick says, walking forward and rubbing his hands together. I’ll get to work on your distraction, and you guys can start scaling the building.

What floor are they on? Christian asks.

    10th floor, sir.

    I cringe. That’s a long climb.

    Good luck, soldiers.

We all stay silent as Nick sits in front of his computer.

Elliot, what’s their exact location again? Nick asks.

After he gets the location, he falls silent for a few minutes and then smiles.

There’s officially an electrical problem in the building. The fire alarm just went off. The traffic lights around that area are also going haywire. I’m hoping no one gets hurt, but horns are honking, and there’s a hell of a lot of noise. Let’s hope some of the perps go check things out.

Christian places a hand on his shoulder. Nice job, Nick.

Thirty minutes later, the team reports back to us. They’ve completed their mission, and the perpetrators have been taken care of. I don’t even need to look at my friends to know the same look is mirrored on all our faces.

It’s almost like we’re out there on the operation ourselves. We may be retired rangers, but I know the urge to be back on missions hits us all occasionally. It’s why we do this, why we help train other teams. The rush from doing something good. From making sure the bad guys are caught. It’s addictive. And it’s not an addiction one can get over easily.

Someone just came in, Nick announces.

My eyes move toward the security camera installed at the front of the inn. A man is opening the front door.

We have a guest, I state.

    Everyone gets to their feet.

I’d better get dinner, Elliot says before walking out.

I’ll show him to his room, Andrei states, speaking up for the first time in an hour.

He’s more of an action guy instead of a man of words. It’s also probably not a good idea for him to meet the guest alone. He’ll probably terrify the poor man. Andrei’s a large man, tall at 6’4 and heavily built. With his green eyes, dark hair, and quiet personality, he’s like a frightening bodyguard or an assassin sent to kill you.

I give Nick a look, and with a smile, he follows Andrei out of the room.

When the five of us chose to retire two years ago, I never would have thought this was where we would find ourselves. But collectively, we decided that opening an inn in the small town of Clarkdale was the best option. There aren’t many people here, so we wouldn’t draw any attention to ourselves. Therefore, we could still assist the army and any rangers whenever needed.

Putting together our individual talents, the inn was also the most obvious decision, especially for a group of middle-aged men. Most people don’t know where we came from or why we’re here, but the inn has assisted us in building some trust and establishing a sort of home here.

We need some supplies. I’ll go into town, I announce.

I head out of the secure room and up a flight of stairs until I find myself in the inn’s reception area. It’s a three-story building with ten bedrooms for customers and five extra ones for us. The guest bedrooms are on the second floor, while our living quarters are on the top floor. The first floor has a kitchen, dining room, and a small living area where guests can rest and spend their leisure time. The ground floor isn’t open to anyone else apart from us.

The inn doesn’t look much, but we get an adequate amount of customers. The town’s relatively quiet, but there’s a steady flow of people coming in here. Mainly people looking to enjoy the stunning  mountain terrain. Most of our visitors are thrill seekers, mountain climbers, and hikers, and there are also tourists seeking to discover more
