    The snap of the bolt cutters on the padlock.

    The metal on metal sound of the roll-up door opening.

    These were the call to action for Dana. She’d been attending storage locker auctions for the past four years and never tired of it. There was a thrill every time the doors opened, and she got her first look at the contents. She didn’t always make a purchase. For her, it was more about the hunt than the purchase. But when she did purchase a unit, it was because her gut told her to.

    I can’t believe I let you drag me here, I muttered, trying and failing to not roll my eyes in frustration. We could’ve just gone to the pool and had a nice lazy day, I added.

    I said you didn’t have to come, Justine, Dana replied, doing her best to get a glimpse at the locker’s contents. None of the half-dozen bidders were allowed to enter the locker or touch any of the contents.

    Do you smell that? I asked. It smells like something died in there. I was sure if we went inside the dimly lit storage space, we’d find a dead rat if we were lucky.

    That happens sometimes, Dana muttered, not really listening to me.

    I could see some old furniture that may or may not be considered antique. There were several dented and slightly rusty metal filing cabinets. And what Dana referred to as the treasure chests of storage lockers, more than a dozen clean and taped cardboard boxes. It all looked like trash to me, and I was really hoping she wouldn’t bid
