    Disgraced Knight

    Prologue

    Cincinnati, Ohio

I still remember my last meeting with Charles Sparky Huffman like it was yesterday. Talk about a stressful day. More like a day from hell, if I was being honest. There were issues on the distillery floor, in the barrel room, and in the boardroom. Everyone was pissing me off, and I still had to drive home during rush hour traffic because Sparky wouldn’t come to the office.

Sometimes he could be a real asshole.

But Sparky was in town for a change, so I went home early to meet him. Since his Helen’s passing, he rarely stayed in Cincinnati. He’d woken up next to her chilled body one morning and had tried to revive her but couldn’t. Shortly after, Sparky moved to Florida, leaving his daughter, Vivian, and his granddaughter, Alexis, here alone before all hell broke loose and Sparky sold the house they lived in. He’d become a full-time snowbird, staying in Florida except for a few times a year when he would come back here to visit. And since Vivian had moved to Texas, those visits became more and more infrequent.

I can hardly remember the last time he was actually in town.

When I finally arrived home, Sparky met me at the door, ashen-faced as if someone had died or he’d seen a ghost. Even now, I can still see his anguished expression in my mind. The only other time I remembered Sparky being so agitated was when he found Helen the morning after she suffered a stroke in her sleep.

    It’s bad, isn’t it? I questioned him.

Let’s go inside. This is a conversation we need to have sitting down, he replied.

I opened the screen door, and we both entered the house. I half expected to hear Helen, either of them, call my name as my foot hit the entryway, but it didn’t happen. My sister had been gone for six years, and my wife—my Helen—was out playing bridge with friends. I sucked in a breath to fortify myself against the disappointment and pain when I didn’t hear my sister’s voice call my name. I never thought she would pass before me. While I was never much of a praying man, I prayed I never lost my Helen in the same manner in which Sparky lost my sister.

Am I going to need a drink with this conversation, Charles?

Sparky ran his hand through his salt-and-pepper hair. Probably. I’ll need one as well.

Let’s go into my study. I have some whiskey I think you’ll appreciate.

He nodded slightly in agreement, and we made our way through the living room toward the back of the house where my office was located. Once in my office, Sparky sat on the leather couch facing the fireplace while I poured our spirits.

Liquor in hand, I headed over to Sparky when he murmured, I’m dying. She needs to inherit the House.

I jostled the glasses but somehow managed to keep them upright, not losing a drop of liquid.

    Did I hear him correctly?

I know I didn’t hear you right, I objected, needing him to repeat what he had said.

Sparky held his hand out for the drink, and I passed it over to him. Taking a long sip, he drank a good bit of the whiskey before repeating himself. I’m dying. I need Alexandria to take possession of the Foster House.

"Charles, you know it’s too early. She’s too
