WANTED The Mysterious Disappearance of Sarah Whitman - Maria Florinda Loreto Yoris

    CHAPTER 1

For Sarah, the cottage brought back many memories that were so beautiful that they were painful. However, she was determined to face her past, without suspecting the terrible surprise that fate had in store for her.

That Friday, it was around five in the afternoon when Sarah Whitman received an unexpected visit from her mother, who seemed to have a kind of radar to detect when her daughter was about to make a bad decision.

Sarah's mother got out of a taxi and, before closing the door, threw her coat over her shoulders, shivering a little from the cold October wind. Before crossing the street, she confirmed that her daughter was in her apartment because, despite the low temperature, the kitchen window was open. By mutual agreement, and due to certain unpleasant events with Sarah's ex-partner, Bridget had a key to her daughter's house. She usually warned before visiting her, but that day she showed up unexpectedly at her apartment.

Sarah was in her room, packing a little luggage to spend the weekend outside the city, when she heard her mother insert the key in the door. They looked quite alike, despite the age difference, people used to think they were sisters. The main difference was that, while Bridget had olive green eyes and ash blonde hair, Sarah had brown eyes and hair.

Mother and daughter kissed each other on the cheeks.

—How nice to see you, mom! —Sarah greeted with a smile—. It's been so many days since we saw each other!

—Yes, daughter —Bridget answered quietly and in a serious tone.

—When we spoke the last time on the phone I heard you in good spirits, now you have that seriousness, is something in particular happening?

    Bridget sighed.

—Well, I must admit that I am worried. You are my only daughter and I wish your well-being above all.

    —And what's that for, mom?

    Bridget raised her eyebrows.

—Sarah, please! Whenever we talk I avoid the topic so as not to argue, but I'm tired of being silent and being treated as if I were a child who you can fool, I'm your mother!

Sarah felt uncomfortable because she knew what Bridget was talking about, but with the overnight bag on the bed it was going to be very difficult to hide her true plans for that weekend.

    —Okay, mom. Let's talk.

Sarah pointed Bridget to a chair to sit in and took just a few steps away. She sighed impatiently because she knew that her mother sometimes liked to dramatize everything, but she was also aware that, mother after all, she was usually right. It was obvious that this was not going to be a short visit: Bridget had something stuck in her throat that she urgently wanted to tell her and she was not going to leave the apartment until she had told her everything. Sarah grabbed a pair of pants from the chair to put them in her luggage, but her mother's first words surprised her so much that she dropped them to the floor.

—Did you reconcile with Ralph? —Bridget began in a tone of voice of feigned indifference.

—What if I reconciled with Ralph? —Sarah had the feeling that she had to buy time to recover from her bewilderment—. No —she also answered with feigned calm—. We never see each other and you know it. Why are you asking me that, mom? Oh, I know! You've seen in the entertainment gossip his breakup with the woman he spent the last year with.

—Yes I have seen it. A famous model, daughter of an important American film producer, if I remember correctly.

—Don't pretend you know little —Sarah replied dryly—. Let's see mom, is there any reason for me to have seen Ralph and reconciled with him?

—I thought maybe he would have called you now that he's alone.

—I haven't heard from Ralph in a while. Even if he has ended his relationship, he doesn't have to call me, these are your ideas.

—I wish they were my ideas! Let me be clearer, Sarah: a friend of mine saw you having dinner with him last week. When that incident happened that caused you to separate, I expressly asked you not to see him again.

Sarah shuddered at her mother's words and took a step back. She knew it was useless to deny her, but she couldn't tell her the truth either, at least until she clarified her romantic situation with Ralph. Something she intended to do that weekend.

—Okay, Mom. I admit I saw him last week, but nothing has come up between us. He and I have gone our separate ways since our breakup two years ago.

—So you don't care what happened? Don't you remember what he did to you?

—Let's stop the drama, mom! —Sarah almost shouted, furious—. I refuse to let you control my life, as if I were a child. Let me make my own mistakes.

—And look what happened to you with Ralph! —Bridget harassed her cruelly—. You only lasted a year and he almost killed you. Don't you respect yourself? What do you have in your head, air?

Sarah was pale. The conversation with her mother revived the painful past that she had tried to bury two years before and that did not allow her to start another relationship. She wasn't even sure she
