Journey to the world of fairies
Mike and the enchanted emerald
On Mike's tenth birthday, his parents decided to go celebrate at the beach house. The boy's father considered it the best investment of his life, given the fascination that the sea aroused in him, in his wife and in his son. It was a magical place where they could appreciate, from any distance, the shimmering greens and blues of the water. There the sun's rays were reflected and refracted, giving an authentic spectacle of vibrant colors.
Since the beginning of the week, the world seemed to be happy about the approach of Mike's birthday. There was a radiant sun, the sky and the sea were the same thing, barely delimited by the fine line of the horizon, and the sands of the beach seemed like an infinite carpet full of dots that shone like stars in broad daylight.
It was Saturday morning when the González Rizquez family arrived at Las Caracolas, and Mike immediately ran to be enchanted by the sea, while his parents took care of preparing the house for their two-day stay.
Mike was curious, instead of returning home, he walked through the bright sand, to a secluded place where some sparkles could be seen among the bushes and rocks. Then, to his astonishment, he saw a beautiful creature with the face and figure of a teenager, who danced naked to the rhythm of the waves that broke on the shore of the beach.
Mesmerized, the boy observed that fascinating being and thought he heard an exquisite melody in which the sea breeze spread her name: Amelie. Immediately, Mike looked down and saw an incandescent green stone, surrounded by three seashells. He remembered that his father had told him many stories about undines and had told him that they hid a human soul. He felt a little lonely because he longed for a brother that his parents had not been able to give him, and he thought that Amelie would make an excellent playmate.
—Take it, it's for you, —the sea dancer said in a very soft tone.
-What is it?
—It's an enchanted emerald. Take good care of it because it works like a magical clock that turns back time.
—And how is it used?
—When you desire something from your heart, as long as a common clock strikes one, she will make it dawn. At the beginning of the day... everything is possible!
Mike looked at Amelie again and, on impulse, picked up the glowing stone along with the seashells and put them in his left pocket. He put his other hand into his right bag and took the only candy he was carrying to give it to the undine, in gratitude for the enchanted emerald and as proof of fidelity to the friendship that had begun that day.
For the first four years, month after month, Mike would meet in the same place with his lovely friend to talk about the wonders of Amelie's world. Much to his regret, trips to the sea became less frequent, due to economic problems that forced his father to sell the most precious material asset of the González Rizquez family: his house in Las Caracolas. They also had to move to a more modest residential area and, unfortunately, the magic watch that Mike had guarded so jealously was lost during the move. The three seashells remained in place, but the enchanted emerald was gone.
It was Mike's sixteenth birthday and on the third day of continuous rain, Sebastián González had to cross the flooded backyard to remove everything that the water had dragged there. His wife Silvia had had a very bad night with a persistent cough that had affected her for a few months and the doctor had recommended taking her to the sea. That was the main reason why Sebastián borrowed the house from a former resident of Las Caracolas and Mike was able, after a year's absence, to return to the place where he met Amelie. However, neither Silvia's cough improved nor had Mike been able to meet his sea dancer, the torrential rain had not allowed it. The sky and the sea merged into an intense and gloomy gray and the sand on
