HOW AND WHY THIS CAME ABOUT
What does a godly woman look like?
is a question I've asked myself a lot, in fact, from my early teens on, and one I have always struggled with. We are constantly bombarded with ideas and expectations of what a good
woman looks like, let alone what a godly woman looks like. From the media and society pulling our attention in one direction, our insecurities demanding another, and even different churches often have polarizing opinions; it can become so overwhelming we don't know where to start. And that's when the weight of never measuring up to any of those expectations can become exhausting and, if you're like me, can leave one feeling defeated, frustrated, and incomplete. I especially felt this way one night after hearing some women talk about Titus 2:5, and let's just say it rubbed me the wrong way. All those feelings and emotions bubbled up, and I had to stop myself from spiraling. I told myself, This is God's word. I shouldn't have this big of an issue over it. And if I am, one of two things is true: God needs to change my heart, or I don't fully understand the passage.
And the Holy Spirit whispered, Don't stop there. Dig deeper.
So I did. I dug deeper, and as I learned head knowledge of each of these words in this passage, God also taught me the deeper meanings of these words in my personal life through life lessons. This is why this endeavor has taken about ten years to complete. I can be stubborn sometimes, and the longer I chose to resist, the longer God had me linger in that lesson until I fully understood it to be able to teach it. With that, I want you to know all the questions I ask and exercises I have us do, know I have asked, answered, done, and worked through them all myself first - through tears, fears, anger and frustration, bitterness and deep sorrow, regret, and conviction, pain and healing relief. All in hopes that my journey may encourage someone else that you are not alone in your struggle, in the battle, in the fight, and to all who might be struggling with the same question, that they too may find freedom that only God's word can bring and leave encouraged and confident to walk boldly in your identity in Christ Jesus.
The set up of this Bible study is rather nontraditional. The lessons aren’t set up as five days of homework per week, but rather content to go over once a week, if you are doing this with a group, or go at your own pace if you are doing it on your own. Whichever pace you choose, the most important thing is to take time to take it to heart. If that means sitting with a question all week, do that. The point isn’t to finish a Bible study, the point is to learn, apply, and live each concept and truth.
A WOMAN OF GOD
What Does it Mean to Be a Woman of God?
Definitions of what it means to be a woman are thrown at us constantly: through social media, Hollywood, the fashion runways, at the checkout stand yelling at us in CAPS, or staring back at us from books, billboards, and in the cosmetic aisles. But what does it mean to be a woman of God?
What are some of the words that pop into your head when you think of a woman of God?
What are some words that first come to mind of how the world portrays what a woman should be, act, or look like?
These views are quite the opposite, and yet we are called to live like the one, (godly women), and only live in, (the world), the other but not of it. This can be incredibly hard when everything around you is screaming one thing and your heart, God and His Word are saying another. To be able to live in a world where we are constantly bombarded with a standard and view that is opposite to God's calling for how we are to live, act and be, we need to arm ourselves with knowing, with assurance, who it is that God has called us to be and what it looks like in action for us to model.
There are lots of scriptures that talk about what a godly woman looks like. But with this study we are going to focus in on just one of the scriptures, Titus 2:5. Go ahead and read that now.
Some of the words that pop up in my head for what a godly woman should be are from Titus 2:5: "...To be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands…[NKJV]
These are words that I've heard countless times to describe what a godly woman should be; they always looked intimidating and, on the surface, seemed to paint a picture to me that women were weak and didn't have much of a role to play. So I took it apart word by word, and I hope you'll hang in there with me in discovering all the true wonders and riches hidden in these sometimes rather daunting words. As we study these words in Titus 2:5 and dig in deep to their roots, we will see women who lived out these words as examples for us to observe and learn, whether gleaning from their actions or learning from their mistakes. By the end of this study, I hope that we will all come away with a better picture in our mind of what a godly woman looks like. As well as gain character and attributes in our hearts to be able to face the struggles and battle that come against us each day.
Though there are many words we will study, it is all for one purpose. To seek God first and find our identity in Him. We need to know the truth to be able to accurately extinguish the lies the enemy tells us. We will study this more in-depth once we get into the study, but for right now, I want to start with some scriptures of who God says we are.
So grab your Bibles or look up these passage on your favorite bible app 1 Peter 2:9-10 and Psalm 139:13-17 and write out who it says we are.
The women we will read about and study aren't perfect; they have human reactions, raw emotions, struggles, and trials, which some overcome, while others are overcome by them. But I hope that as we study these women, we will see that it is possible to live out these attributes in practical everyday challenges we face and that we might be able to live like women of God in a culture that screams the opposite.
As I have mentioned before, this is not your traditional Bible study set up. This Bible study is broken up into sections by word and its subsequent root word. Each section starts with the main word used in Titus and then the definition of the greek word that built the word in the text. If you picture each word we study as an onion with all its layers, with each word we study we are peeling back a layer of the onion untill we get to the core or center of the onion, or in our case the root of the word.
DISCREET: TRUE FULFILLMENT.
