    Scraping Sanity - Justus Daniels

    Preface

Frank was raised in a dysfunctional family. But he still had his head on his shoulders. Things in life can make people do something that is completely out of character. Sometimes you have to live with the guilt and torment of things we decide to do in the moment.

Revenge killing or an eye for an eye you could say it either way. Fact is people make decisions based on emotion at times. Those decisions we all have to deal with in our own way.

This true story starts in the 1960s with a young man madly in love with a girl far away. Hope everyone enjoys the ups and downs in this book.

    Growing up

    ––––––––

Growing up on a farm was tough on the mind and body. Working hard to please a person who could never be pleased or At least he didn’t have the ability to show his appreciation. We had a dairy farm and like all farms the work never ends.

We moved a lot growing up. One of the places we lived was on the border of an Indian reservation. This is where I met my wife Sunny. She had jet black hair and dark skin but her eyes were blue like the day time sky. Her native name was sunshining.

When we moved to the farm in nineteen seventy every chance I got I would jump on the motorcycle and go. It wasn’t my fault the cycle only went to the reservation. A few days later a police officer would pick me back up and drive me back home. It got so familiar a routine that the officer started staying for dinner before taking me back to the farm.

When I finally graduated from High School I was gone. Sunny was happy to finally have me with her every day. Hey Sunny, I want to be a chef. I want to have my own kitchen to work at and cook for people, Frank told her. How are we going to do that with these kids? Sunny asked. I don’t know yet but we will figure it out, Frank said.

Picking up all we had which wasn’t much. Frank and Sunny headed to the east coast. So what is the plan Frank?Sunny questioned. I am going to go to every restaurant I can find here and see if the head chef will mentor me, Frank said. Days turned into weeks and no one would help Frank. Middle of the fourth week Frank had had enough. Pack up we are going to hide away on the next ship heading to Europe, He told her.

Are you nuts we have kids Frank, Sunny protested. When we got married do you remember what I asked you before saying our vows, Frank said. No why don’t you remind me, Sunny said, knowing all too well what he was hinting at. I told you I will do whatever it takes to make our life a success, He told Sunny.

Sneaking onto the ship wasn’t easy. The ship yard had armed guards. Why do they need that kind of security?, Sunny asked Frank. Not sure but these ships hold millions of dollars in cargo, Frank said. Hiding between two freight containers Frank waited until the crane operator was changing shifts before making his move. Come on hurry honey grab the bag and Lilly and let's go, Frank told her.

Moving quickly they were able to jump onto the ship from the lower docks. When the operator comes off the boat he leaves the door open for the next person loading the
