PART ONE
Rocks at Windows
Yes,
we were
the kids throwing rocks
at windows, calling them
down, sledding
at midnight, swimming
in hot springs, daring each other,
ourselves to kiss, streaking
with smiles, lost
in time, not knowing
our futures would
break us
all.
Sloppy Firsts
It wasn’t cinematic,
lips moving gently toward each other,
hands running through hair,
butterflies,
an orchestral score sweeping over the scene,
only shock, terror,
eyes wide open,
and a deluge of spit to wipe off.
The Tracks
We didn’t intentionally
step closer to death
white knuckling the railing
as it roared past,
we wanted the train
to drown our screams,
shutting our eyes
against all that was
out of our control,
hoping the train
would take them with it.
Jousting
I found confidence
saying hello
to someone new
in the hall.
It battled
the insecurity
in me when
they didn’t say it back.
Teenage Trials
Another CD case stolen.
Another reason not to go on.
Gesundheit
We sat on her bed
whispering
about her first orgasm.
