    About the Author

    Pendulum: sneak peek

    A Cacophony of Drones

Deadlines are thrown about a room like the fourth of July.

The dirt on the floor has been there for years

and no plans exist for its removal.

The shallow divots in the children’s cheeks show

    they haven’t eaten in weeks

as they run the presses up and down the streets.

    That is,

    until production slows,

    the people stop,

and a silent boom reverbs in everyone’s hearts.

    A single headline is printed,

    over and over,

Wall Street’s A Crime: Worst Crash Yet!

    This is 1929.

    Ambition

On a train from Connecticut to Pennsylvania,

there was a certain college student my eyes could not avoid.

    Surrounding him, and his seat,

    were several piles of crumpled papers;

a deep set frown hooked into his brow.

He would scribble a few words onto his notepad,

    sigh noisily with great frustration,

then crumple the paper and toss it from view—now this piece of crumpled paper,

just so happened to land my way.

I un-crumpled it as quietly as I could,

    then read on unabashedly.

    My God,

    it was a letter.

    They were all letters

    of proposal! What’s more,

they were directed to a dear girl I know!

    Needless to say
