    Chapter One: Hunter and the Hunted

    BANG! See. How the animal collapsed. That was a clean kill. That’s what we want. If it’s not clean, the adrenaline will ruin the meat. Anya Petrov is teaching her daughter to snipe today in Bryansk Oblost, USSR. The same way she learned on her family farm; hunting wild boars. Anya goes by Volchitsa within the ranks of Shepot. It means Wolfmother. The other wolves will just have to be satisfied with moose and doe. She nabbed a buck already. But the boars are more destructive to the kolkhoz they belong. It’s a small semi-private farm where she can donate any boars to others as she has done her whole life. Despite Rhys’ atheism, she has kept a kosher home as she always has. She coaches her daughter Radost who is not even 10 yet. As you run, stop quickly. Try to feel the wind in your hair. We use this as a gauge to adjust our fire. A trick she has taught many Shepot Agents as their Wolfmother. If you can hit a wild boar in this state, you can hit almost anything, Radost.

    Radost sees a wild boar, she bolts, suddenly stops and fires. I did it. And we leave it?

    Yes. I will send someone else to pick it up for their family. They will also pick up what we left of the buck. I’ll cook our venison tomorrow, while you bother Papa.
