CHAPTER 1
It’s all about being fake in high school.
All of us faked something of ourselves in our senior class. Firebird High School hosted humans, children of shifters - who were shifters themselves, and those who couldn’t shift like me, the nulls. Children of shifters who couldn’t shift were put in a class separate from the others. There were twenty of us and therefore had only three teachers - homeroom teacher Mrs. Valiya, physics teacher Mr. Mak, and PE teacher Ms. Garber.
My parents were bear shifters, but I was a null. The only thing I had from them were my good looks and my mind. My mom passed away years ago, leaving me to take care of Dad. Dad and I did a lot of science experiments together, and I dreamed of becoming a particle chemist in the future.
Back to the fakeness of the class. Teens never liked smart alecks. So, I took on the persona of an airhead—someone who cared more about nails, hair, and had bad grades. I told everyone that I got bad grades, but teachers knew to keep their mouths shut. They didn’t correct me when someone asked what I got on a test and I said I got a D or a C. When they found something amazing, they would exclaim about how badly I did on a paper or exam, earning laughter from fellow students. My boyfriend and mate, Maverick, reddened on my behalf, but he had his fake moments as well, like being in love with me. He wasn’t in love with me, and he didn’t care much for our mate bond, but he acted like he did in front of our classmates. After the first time he cheated, I decided to play along and get him to buy things for me. His parents, cougar shifters, donated a lot of money to our town and they were loaded.
I twirled my blond hair with my pink manicured fingers. I really hated pink, but it was part of my persona. Was the day over yet? I sighed, this morning I saw Maverick kissing Olga before the morning bell and really wanted him to spend money on a useless item. Maverick, bae. I need a new purse.
Maybe that was why he was pulled to Olga, the gal two seats behind me, who was also the daughter of a cougar shifter. Maverick’s family were all cougars.
Maverick and I found out we were mates a couple of years ago and always sat next to each other after that. Olga showed up a month ago and since then, Maverick has been stealing glances at her and I caught them kissing. They’ve probably done more. I felt it in the bond, but I pretended I didn’t. You see, airhead girls didn’t pay attention to details much. He was getting away with cheating, so he thought, and I allowed him. Before Olga showed up, Maverick carried me home on his back, and we laughed for hours together. We promised to lose our virginity to each other at prom because it felt romantic. After Olga showed up, he ditched me after school, coming up with stupid excuses and stopped calling to say goodnight.
See, the problem between mates who couldn’t shift was that we were more human and could potentially have feelings for other people. My dad taught me to respect the bond. Maverick’s parents didn’t teach him the same. It was really sad that I would end up not being with a promised soul. It was only a matter of time before Maverick would break up with me to be with a
