Chapter One:  Benefits Of Indoor Gardening In Urban Landscape

    ––––––––

Urban populations are rapidly expanding all over the world. People are choosing to live in or around major cities because of the opportunities usually provided in these centers of growth. It is a fact that options for work, education, and entrepreneurship are generally more abundant in urban and suburban regions, hence their continued appeal. It is estimated that more than half of the global population today lives in urban areas.

Despite the many socio-economic advantages of urban living, there are also disadvantages that need to be addressed. Urban populations are often more exposed to pollution, stress, congestion, respiratory illnesses, mental conditions, and other problems due to the quality of life in cities. Urban dwellers must contend with traffic and poor air quality, and are often also more prone to depression, anxiety, and other conditions because of the lack of access to nature. While the concrete jungle does offer economic opportunities, it is often at the cost of personal health and well-being.

This reality has given rise to the indoor gardening movement, and an increased awareness of the various benefits that can be gleaned from growing plants and other crops in indoor spaces, regardless of the space. With the growing importance being given to overall health and wellness, city dwellers are also becoming more aware of the positive effects of indoor gardening and a transition to urban green living.

The most touted benefit of indoor gardening is the improvement in air quality. Scientific studies have consistently shown that plants have the tremendous capacity to improve the indoor air quality of urban spaces because of their ability to reduce levels of carbon dioxide, their role in decreasing airborne dust particles, and their natural filtration of harmful pollutants often found in dangerous levels in urban settings, such as benzene, nitrogen dioxide, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene.

When plants are grown indoors, they increase the levels of oxygen in the home, thus also improving the health of the occupants. With this increase in oxygen intake, the risk of many common respiratory ailments of urban dwellers is also reduced, along with eye irritation or chronic headaches, both of which have also been linked to low oxygen and poor air quality. The presence of an indoor garden can do wonders to improve the health of the residents.

Indoor plants and gardens have been cited in various scientific studies to be one of the most effective solutions to sick building syndrome (SBS). SBS is a relatively modern phenomenon believed to be caused by various agents or pollutants in buildings, including
